I was just wondering what kind of mono you guys use for tolling crankbaits for walleye. I am looking to get set up for it so lb test and brands would be helpful.

    thank you

For trolling cranks I would go with spiderwire Stealth 20 lb. You’ll find alot of others to agree. Mono is a thing of the past. Stealth has less stretch so monster hooksets should be avoided! Try it, tou’ll be happy IMO

I use 10# Trilene XT. It has never let me down, and the numbers in the trolling bible are right on.

I’m a big fan of 14# Berkley Fireline (black). I always run about a 6′ leader of mono though. Tied on a small ball-bearing swivel, then the mono (I’ve been using 12# flourocarbin) and then a small crosslatch. Easy to switch cranks with the cross latch and they seem to run better.

As stated above, don’t get crazy with your hooksets due to the lack of stretch in the line. I’ve found that my hooking percentages have really increased now that I’m really loosening up my drag. Most strikes (from bigger fish especially) announce themselves with a quick stripping of line off of the spool. Once hooked, I give the drag a little turn and the fight is on.

    Ditto.

There are times when I use mono and times when I use a superline. But when I use mono, it’s 10#xt.

I’ll add another vote for the 10# XT

I made the switch to Fireline Stealth for trolling and casting cranks several years ago. I actually used Spiderwire Fusion until they stopped making it. It took some experimenting but eventually I learned to go with a longer, more flexible rod when trolling with no-stretch lines. I also learned to loosen the drag on the reel slightly. Make sure that the hooks on your crank are sharp and the fish will mostly hook themselves. My main reason for switching from mono to superline was to cut down on the number of lost crankbaits. While I still snag-up and lose the occasional crankbait I lose way less than half of the crankbaits that I used to lose when fishing with mono. I’ve even switched to super line when pulling double rapala rigs.

When using mono I mostly use 10 Berkley XT but I do have one rod with Maxima 10 lb and like it. Fireline and Power Pro are the two other lines I use for long lining crankbaits. There are times when I prefer mono over the superlines and some people are switching back to mono but the Fireline and Power Pro are very nice lines for feeling what your crankbait is doing and you lose less crankbaits in areas that could be snaggy.
    Thanks, Bill

Trilene Sensation – less stretch and smaller diameter that other lines so I can use heavier # test in each application. Been pulling boards with this line for 5 years!

Here is a technical question that I wonder if it has ever been tested.

    My question is:
    While trolling a crank.

When you run mono, it is shock absorbing, thus “absorbing” some of the harmonics of the wiggle of the crank. The crank is still going to wiggle, but the harmonics given off will be dampened.

When you run a superline, that has zero stretch, you have a higher harmonic given off.

Do you think this might matter in the performance of the crank and the reaction of the fish?

We hear our superlines “whine” at different times under high-speed, yet mono won’t unless it is pulled tight like a guitar string.

Power Pro, power pro, power pro.

Did i mention power pro yet?

2/10 is what i use for trolling. It has superb nick resistance for trolling rocks and you can snap of weeds like you would with all other super lines.

Ask Birddog how many cranks he lost using fireline vs power pro.

    Lol!!!!

I just want to add to the previous post…

    POWER PRO !

I use the 14# with a 15-20ft tippet of 10# sensation or vanish. Tie them together with a Uni-Knot (never had a failure). P-pro is the s__t! No memory and twist issues! All I can say is that I’ve switched nearly all my rigs to it and can’t be happier.

But like another previous post mentioned, light drag setting when trolling is a must.

thank you guys for chiming in. I currently do run rods with fireline, but am looking at trying mono to see if there are times that it will out perform the superlines such as shallow water or suspended fish.

I use Trilene XT clear 10#. I firmly believe that mono sometimes works better than fireline and vise versa. I have had it happen on several occasions. Maybe the action is a tad different. On those tough days it can make or break a day. Anyone else have that happen when mono outperforms fireline or the other way around?

    I have 2 linecounter setups spooled w/ 10 XT.
I have 2 w/ Fireline. 14# I believe. I will be putting Pwer Pro on these two next spring. I have come to like PP better than Fireline.
I have PP on another setup.
In the early fall when there can be a lot of “stuff” floating in the H2O I start w/ a superline set up 1st. I want to KNOW that the lure is not fouled from a bit of weed.
Later in the year when getting the bait farther back of the boat and there is not as much stuff in the water I use mono to keep the baits higher.
I run mono on boards in the summer though. Like all in fishing, if they aren’t biting I throw all of the “rules” above out and start trying to find a pattern.
I use the smallest crosslocks and feel that the little bit they affect action is worth it for being able to change plugs fast.

eh, did anyone mention power pro yet?(LOL) really great stuff, match #tests to specific rods and reels, you won’t be disappointed.
