Interchangeable props…Merc and Yamaha ?

I just replaced the 2004 Mercury Optimax 225 with a 2005 Yamaha 225 4 stroke on my 2025 Lund. The Yamaha dealer told me that he thought the props were interchangeable but he only handles Yamaha is is relatively new to the business. I did put the prop that I had on the Mercury onto the Yamaha, but it does not seem to fit as well as it did on the Mercury. Maybe it’s because the shaft on the Yamaha is new and the splines are still sharp. I did have to take off a thick (approx 1/2″ thick) brass splined washer to get the prop on. I’m not really sure what the washer is for. It seems kind of heavy to just be for shipping but the washer is internally splined so it only goes down to the bottom of the splines on the shaft. I bought the motor from a dealer in Florida off of ebay (it is new), and nobody around here seems to have ever dealt with anything that big before. Can anyone give me some help ? We are getting ready to go to Canada in just over a week. I don’t want to buy a new prop if I don’t have to, but neither do I want to have problems when I get up there.
    Thanks

The brass washer is called the Thrust Washer. You should have had one on both the Merc and Yammi. You cannot run the prop without it installed. If you did, you would never get the prop back off.

Get ahold of an authorized Yammi dealer. I believe there is a adapter kit you need to run Merc blades on Yammi motors.

I’m running a Merc Vengeance prop on my Yamaha and a Flo-Torque hub kit was needed.
