me and a buddy were boarded tonight after the rodeo and he has a 67 chev Impala the tranny need rebuilt so we climbed under and started taking it out we got it out for the most part and are about a 1/4 of an inch from getting the shaft out of the fly wheel and the top of the tranny is stuck on the fire wall and the pan is stuck on the cross member so my question is how do you get the cross member out without the whole frame twisting we took one bolt out and loosed the other and it moved so much we quickly put them back and are calling for back up

it is sitting on 4 jacks 2 on the front 2 on the back on the frame rails

    thanks

You didn’t say which way the frame is wanting to go, in/out? If both sides of the frame are wanting to squeeze in, you can make a spreader to keep the rails apart to get the crossmember out. If it’s wanting to go out, a pipe clamp will hold the rails in.
But, having said that, is sounds like you need to take the car to a body shop and get the frame set straight. A bent frame can put a lot tension and stress on your drive train.

    Wait a minute……
The “frame” didn’t move……The tranny moved, or the crossmember moved…….right???

If the frame would have moved/twisted, how would you get the crossmember back in???

You have to remove the crossmember in order to remove the tranny, unless you want to pull the motor. Two bolts on each side. Knock it to the rear on one side and you should have no problems.

Raise the trans up so the mount is free of the cross member. Slide on side of the cross member forward and the other end to the back of the car. Then is should come out. Remove trans!

It is fine the way its sitting just remove the 4 bolts ( 2 on each side) and take it out. If the frames moving you have more issues than just a tranny.
