I am thinking of buying some rod covers in order to keep my rods from tangling in the rod locker of my boat. I fished in late June with Sliderfisn and was impressed how easily he could go into his rod locker and pull out another rod with out spending time untangling. But then again his boat was better organized than most. I have a couple questions to everyone: Do you use rod covers? If so, what brand do you use and where did you purchase them?

I use the drift control sleeves, They fit over the rods nicely and don’t get caught on anything, I know Gander carries them but I’m sure the other larger chains do also.

August 7, 2007 at 3:30 pm #597731I use the Cabela’s covers, the new ones have a velcro strip that lets you adjust the length by just folding the tip over, really slick! Also buy 5 or more and they take a buck off each one.
August 7, 2007 at 3:39 pm #597736Dad and I just spin our line around the rod and it works fine for us.
GNFISNPosts: 208August 7, 2007 at 5:00 pm #597761Bass Pro has them for about 3 bucks – best money you will spend in my opinion. Get one for every rod – the’re awsome.
August 7, 2007 at 5:00 pm #597762I just went to Cabela’s website. The rod covers are marked down from $4.88 each to $1.88 each. I ordered 10. Shipping was $4.95.

Yes. Get a lot of use out of the rod sleeves transporting rod in the back of the pickup. Keeps the line and rods from getting dinged.

Which one did you order? I just went to the website, they show on sale from $4.99 to $2.88. Where did you find the $1.88?
August 7, 2007 at 5:32 pm #597780I have some sleeves but don’t use them often. We built a rod storage system in my side rod locker. It doesn’t solve the tangling problem for all of my rods, but it does hold 5 rods apart from each other securely. I’m thinking of adding another 5 tubes on the other side.
This would still leave me some room for a few extra trolling rods. I usually only have about 8 rods in the boat unless someone else is going with.
August 7, 2007 at 5:43 pm #597787i second the “spin the line around the rod”. it’s free, fast, and i have enough to cluter the boat as at is.
August 7, 2007 at 6:25 pm #597807I’m with Tyeee on this one. I use the Cabela’s ones that have the adjustable velcro strap, and have yet to have any problems. I know fellow member walleye4 also uses them, and loves em.
August 7, 2007 at 7:21 pm #597835I do not have a rod organizer. Thought about it but my rod locker in my boat really does not have enough room.
August 7, 2007 at 7:23 pm #597837I wrap the line around my rods as well before I put them in the rod locker. The problem is that they still get the eyelets trangled with other rods.
August 7, 2007 at 8:29 pm #597870Are the rod sleeves big enough to go over a bait left tied on and hooked in the brace of the stripper guide?
How about durability. My problem is that I am too lazy to take the lures off and the lures get caught on all the other rods. Would the sleeves get hooks stuck in them easily?
August 7, 2007 at 8:43 pm #597875I had my FW make some that covered the whole rod and reel out of ripstop nylon, I could fit a dozen rods in the side locker of my Mr Pike.
No tangles
August 7, 2007 at 10:26 pm #597906I do not have a rod organizer in my boat so I use rod wraps on all my rods. I can stuff way to many rods into a place that was never meant to hold so many. Not that I use them all but like a Mastercard, can’t leave home without it.
I use the ones with-out the Velcro ends, I have had problems with them but that’s just me. I like the ones with the elastic strap that slips over the reel like the Cabelas brands shown in a previous post. Yes, you can leave your lures still tied on as most of my rods are always ready with lures attached, just do not hook the lure to an eyelet as it can wreck the ferules. Most good rods have a hook holder on them.
I have always wanted to try rod-savers like Jon posted but just never have got around to it.August 7, 2007 at 11:54 pm #597941Purchase one drift sock brand, find a good seamstress and make one hundred of them for the price of 5…… There made of like 3 cents worth of cloth but cost 5 to 7 bucks a piece. Plus a good seamstress can make them for any and all sized rods you own, e.g. telescopic, 2 piece, 1 piece, trolling rods, etc….
August 8, 2007 at 12:25 am #597949I have been using the Cabelas brand for years. Best invention since sliced bread.
August 8, 2007 at 12:26 am #597950Send me all your rods and reels. Then you won’t have this problem anymore and I might have something different to fish with.
August 8, 2007 at 2:59 am #597991These seem like a hot commodity! There are only the smaller sizes left on Cabela’s I might have to start making them and put them in the classifieds!!! Cost 10 cents I charge 4 dollars, or a nice lure! p.s. I can put velcro somewhere on them too for the picky guys!

I routinely use my covers on rods that have dual hook crawler harnesses on them, and never have had a hook catch the fabric yet. I think the Cabela’s socks are sort of a ripstop fabric, and they resist hooking real well. As for cranks, I’ve never tried it.
