Alright so I was out and about today doing some chores for the wife, when I decided I deserved a reward for my good deeds. So I stopped and looked at some lures, and Have heard good things of Rat-L-Traps so I grabbed 2. however seeing as how I have never used them before I’m now thinking I should have gone with something else. So I come to you guys asking questions. What techniques do you find work best?

I troll with them, and use them at wing dams. Dragging them over wing dams slowly, just fast enough to feel them working is “Dyno-mite”.

in my opion it all depends on the color and time of year. but i fish them a couple of ways. in sand make it hit the bottom and kinda drag it like a fish searching for food with a pause here and there. wingdams i bouce it off of the rocks or swim it right over the top. the hit usually comes in the pause of the bounce or the break of fast to slow water. the fish will let you know which they want. weeds are hard and if you dont have confidence in the trap you will be frustrated, but skim the top with a steady retriev. yes you will do a lot of cleaning of the lure. and if you dont clean it will not work right. the last and most expensive way is to drag the bottom. real slow retriev that gets you snagged a lot but i find works on slow bites. be careful of that snag it may be a fish.
anyway like i said this is in my opinion and i dont use traps exclusively either. hope it helps.

You can’t fish them wrong , a fast retrieve works great on the northerns . chrome and blue – good luck

i agree with all the above the only thing different would be that i would get a gold and black to fish the high iron content waters to go along with the blue and chrome.

Cant go wrong with the rat-l-trap. Have had a good year already, I usually fish it like a jerk bait and it really paid off Sat. Caught around 15 bass and 7 northerns in a couple of hours. This has become one of my go to baits when the plastics are not working.

I burn it really fast and then make long strokes of the rod tip. This is my favorite method for edging weedlines or just burning expansive spawning flats in the early spring. But I also love zipping them over eel grass and such in late summer with a high rod tip. I’ve had days when they wouldn’t touch a swim jig, but as long as you could keep the grass off your trap for a few seconds in the strike zone, you better be hangin’ on!!

I love to burn the 1/2 Oz. in chrome/blue for hot water river pike, this approach also works well in lakes, fished like Cade detailed, burned just over the grass with an occasional change in retrive speed.

Sweet thanks guys. Good thing I picked up a chrome and blue color , sounds like it may be a solid lure. I can’t wait to get on the water and give them a try. Doesn’t sound like I can fish it wrong.
