Mille Lacs – which species

Good morning all. Names Matt and I’d like to get some basic fishing advise for a Mille Lacs newbie. My family and I will be staying at Izaty’s this weekend and I’m taking my boat (14′ aluminum) up hoping to get out on the water.

I’d like to know what species you recommend fishing for on the south side? I know Mille Lacs means walleye but I like to fish musky as well as perch, bass, mostly anything that swims so thats why I’m here. What can I spend a few hours after on the south side of the lake and have a good chance of success within reach of a 14′ boat?

As long as the wind isn’t coming in to the south shore you’ll be able to get at the smallies on the reefs and piles without a problem.

Enjoy… I’ll be up there chasing them around myself. If you see a big blue G3 give me a wave.

    Welcome to IDA MATT

Being on the South end you have endless options very close as long as there is not a Northerly wind you should be fine with a 14 footer! That area has Perch in the weeds Smallies in the rock piles and reefs, Large Mouth in the weeds, Walleyes everywhere from snad, gravel, rock deep or shallow and even Muskie and Pike all along that shore.

Thanks everyone. I’m definitely going to try to get out. I was debating bringing the muskie box and gear up, but if I got there without it and found out they were “on” I’d be upset.

Good luck to all. If you see an old ugly red lund with a 30 horse johnson puttering around stop and say hello.

Welcome to IDA. A leech or nightcrawler in the Izaty’s harbor should catch plenty of bass, Northerns, sunnies, and crappies. Atleast it did 4 weeks ago.

Looks like you got some great advice already. So welcome aboard! BTW take a few tubes and mepps spinners along if you choose to chase smallies.

I fish Mille Lacs in my 14 footer regularly. As the guys say, check out the weather/wind. The west shore is also a pretty nice place to fish in a smaller boat if the wind is from the west. North of Eddies works well.

might want to try the smallies first….this time of year it is “game on” for the smallie bite on the rock points and reefs.

Wow…lucky you. Good luck and have fun. Mille Lacs is a fantastic lake and has lots of memories for me. Perch in the am and huge walleyes and occasional bonus pikes at night. Do me a favour and please PLAN to fish the lake in fall!!!!!

    hi Matt,
    Welcome to IDA….
when you get back, consider writing a report, in the Mille Lacs, walleye or bass forum.
    good luck.
    Jack.
