Anyone out there have satilite internet? We have been thinking of getting it and I was just wondering who out there has it? We have been looking at the hughesnet brand. Or is there any other brand out there that you would recommend?

I have also been looking into. So far I found ClearBlue to be the most cost efficient. I will be looking for answers here too…

July 12, 2007 at 3:07 pm #589477My parents have it back home, i can’t remember the name, but it’s alright, compared to the dial-up we had. It’s supposed to be as fast as cable/DSL if i remember right, but i can sure tell a difference when i go home, it’s slower than Cable. My mom is a the head IT person for Monsanto and has the system perfected, so it works pretty well for satellite. Make sure in the winter you knock the snow off the dish, and sometimes, very rarely, in extreme cloudy weather, the performance will drop, but it’s pretty much like a Dish, or Direct TV set-up.
July 12, 2007 at 3:11 pm #589480Our satellite TV goes out every time it rains… we kept the cable internet, and switched to satellite TV and saved money that way… so, I can still use the internet when its raining outside… cant say the same for the tv.
July 12, 2007 at 3:42 pm #589492I looked into it a year or so ago and it wasn’t an attractive option because although the download speed was OK the upload speed was still at a snails pace. I’d be interested in finding out if it has changed.

July 12, 2007 at 5:02 pm #589537We have satilite internet through mediacom! There are several different packages that you can receive depending on how much you want to spend. We have the high speed internet and it cost about $35.00 bucks a month. I am very happy with the way it works and the weather does not seem to affect the service at all!
July 12, 2007 at 5:16 pm #589544I took a look at the Hugesnet which was called Direct Way at the time I believe. I remember it being very costly. I think about $500 for the equipment and another $60 every month for the service. I also remember that is was only slightly better than dial up.
Things may have changed since then though.
July 12, 2007 at 5:24 pm #589550I had both the one way system and then upgraded it to the 2 way system!
if your looking to browse the Internet faster it will help!
if your looking to do downloads! it is great! you can download many many files at the same time and at incredible speeds!
if you want it for gaming! its not worth a crap! it take so long to send a packet out and then get a response your looking at ping times around 1400ms for gaming!
conclusion!
If your looking for something that will allow you to surf the web a little faster, and be able to download files very fast it would work good for you!
If your looking for something for gaming its not an option at all!
bottom line its a step up from dial up for surfing no where near cable or DSL downloads are as fast as and faster than cable and DSL but no good for gaming!
I hope this helps ya out!
July 12, 2007 at 5:58 pm #589568I don’t know if DSL is available in your area, but hopefully this will help. I just switched over from Dish Network to Direct TV and had a chance to ask the tech that was installing it about satelite internet. The reason I asked was I was contemplating going to Centurytel DSL at the time. He told me that if I had a choice, I should go with the Centurytel because you have to invest your money in the equipment for the satelite hook-up. If I remember correctly he said in the neighborhood of three to four hundred dollars. He also told me that there was very little difference, if any, in the speed of the two. Monthly charges were close to the same.

hmmm I may have the hardware for saleJuly 12, 2007 at 8:41 pm #589650We don’t have satellite but get our internet through Midwest Wireless via a cell tower. It is fast and so far has never failed regardless of weather, etc.

You should be happy you got the DSL! I have DSL now and there is no comparison! DSL is 300 times better than dish!
dtroInactiveJordanPosts: 1501July 12, 2007 at 9:37 pm #589681I assume your asking because cable or DSL is not available in your area. Look into wireless. You might be surprised. There are a few companies that broadcast signals you might be able to receive and it will probably be much faster than satellite.
I don’t know if it has changed, but a while back you had to upload on a phone line with satellite, which really bogged it down.July 12, 2007 at 9:57 pm #589697Quote:

I am very happy with my DSL.
The only problem I have is I’m on my 3rd modem in 7 monthes. As long as they keep sending me new ones, I don’t care…July 12, 2007 at 10:23 pm #589705Cell phone coverage up here is not that great. It’s a good day when I get 1 bar at my house, most of the time there is no service. It’s hit or miss up here unless your in town.
There are a few companys out there where the dish and set up are 200 bones and 50 bones a month. Has anyone found anthing cheaper. I also have not found a web site for clear blue satellite. IF anyone can find a link please post it.July 12, 2007 at 11:20 pm #589723I would consider an AirCard from Verizon or Sprint before investing in Sat internet equipment. Maybe it’s cheaper than when I looked 3 year ago, but the initial buy in was $500+. Then the monthly was $99.00 per. I’ll take slow speeds.
July 16, 2007 at 3:25 pm #590654I have hughesnet and satellite should be the last resort. It does have good speed for windows, virus protection updates, but is just average for normal surfing. The other common satellite internet provider is wild blue http://www.wildblue.com
One thing to look at with any satellite or wireless internet service is the fair access policy which will usually show a download limit either per day or per month and the penalty for going over the limit.
The cellular data cards are nice, but with the monthly charge of $59 or so, they are only worth it if you are in a EVDO area and not just 1x-rtt. They claim EVDO can reach speeds of 2.5Mbps where 1x-rtt is only 144kbps
