While smallie fishing on the upper north Mississippi this past w-end I found this lone bird perched high in a pine tree. The blackbirds would not leave this poor guy alone. I was born and raised on the river and have fished it since I was a kid and don’t ever remember seeing one of these. Does anybody know what it is? Sorry for not remembering your member name but something eyes the great photographer, you probably can put a name on this guy? Also had this visitor hop off an island while fishing but by the time I got my camera she noticed us and put some safe distance between us.

My initial quess on this bird is a “Green Heron”, or a “Least Bittern”, both of these birds are Heron’s.

But I’ll keep checking it out…

If it is, Central MN is it’s most north/western part of it’s range.

Definately a green heron – the yellow legs are a dead give away. They are sometimes called shy-pokes. They are most often seen by duck hunters at dawn and dusk – but it is definatley one of those right place – right time situations. I saw a pair of them about a week ago around one of our wetlands at our Nature Center. Chuckles

Adult Green Heron-L 18″ WS 26″ WT 7OZ. Uncommon along edges of marshy or wooded streams and ponds, solitary and somewhat secretive. Taken from the “Sibley” field guide to birds of eastern N America.

Green Herons are neat birds. Not nearly as common as the Great Blues. They take crap from no bird, if a Great Blue or Egret is fishing in a spot they want, they will simply chase them off.

I saw a couple at the lake last weekend. I was thinking bittern, but the brother said green heron. Looks like he was right, like the 8# pike I said was 10#. After looking at the picts on the camera, I think he was closer.

    Cool pic Coppertop.
I was just up river from you this past weekend. After I was done guiding, I picked up my Dad and at one point in our close surroundings we had 6 deer, 3 wild turkeys, a bald eagle (that had something in its claws), and a small family of raccoons. I felt like we were at a zoo! Amazing country!!!

At any rate Randy, that pic is cool.
