Motor problem/Question

I have a 80 yamaha tiller. Took it out to the lake this weekend and used it for tubing and fishing etc… and everything worked great. On the last day, we came in for lunch and parked it on the beach. Got back in the boat and went to turn the key to start it up and nothing. It did not even turn over at all. No clicking sound or anything. I looked at the battery connections and they are all good. No corrosion or anything like that. Also checked the safety cord thing that you hook up to your lifejacket and that is good. The trim/tilt works also so I do not think it is a battery issue. Someone mentioned that it might be a fuse. I have not had a chance to look at the owner’s manual to see what/where any fuses might be. I thought I would see if anyone out there has encountered this same problem or has any advice. I would hate to have to take it in and pay and arm and a leg if it is a simple thing like a fuse. Any suggestions????

There’s usually a big (20A or so) fuse inside the motor. My guess, based on my past experiences with a similar problem (50 hp merc 4s), is that you blew this fuse.

Sounds like the battery is dead…It doesn’t take much power to use the tilt/trim, however it takes a lot more to turn the motor over! Was something left on for a long time that could have drained the battery? Radio?
    That would be my guess!

This may sound stupid but I would also check to make sure that it is not still in gear. I had a 90 yammie tiller that would stick into gear from time to time. Try putting it into gear and then back out of gear, see if it starts.

It may be stuck in gear, had that happen on a buddies boat. When we tried to pull start it, found out it was in gear….. That hurt. Just so you know, those motors start pretty with the pull cord.
