Here’s the new MN State Record Shovelnose Sturgeon that was caught out of Everts Resort near Redwing, MN.

The info I have so far follows:

    Nelia Rhose
    5 pounds, 9 oz
    36″ long
    11 7/8 Girth

    Here’s the old record…

    Sturgeon, Shovelnose: 5–5,
    Mississippi River (Goodhue).

Joel, in our little Mississippi River, we have Lake Sturgeon and the smaller Shovels. Nothing as big as the Whites from your area.

Ugly you say? I think that girl is beautiful! I wonder how much if any that fish has changed since the age of the dinosaurs. I’d be interested to know how old the DNR will say she is. Congrats!

    What the…?

That’s it, I’m making a list of all these off the wall records.

I probably caught three or four bigger than that last fall walleye fishing on the Minnesota

That record just might fall this year

Thats cool. When was the photo taken brian? We watchedthem put in and then awhile later it looked like they had motor problems as they came in on the trolling motor. Looks like they had a very good trip.

The shovelnose is plentiful in many Mississippi pools and I might add, they are delicious

That’s all I know at this time. I’ve sent a pm to the party involved and hopefully he’ll jump in and fill us in on the rest of the story.

Eric, the shovels that I’ve seen cleaned (and smoked) have been cleaned similar to a trout…without the head.

One thing to watch for thou…many confuse a little lake sturgeon for a shovel…and the season is closed on them now. The shovels have the (relativily thin section right before the tail. A lakers is thicker. Sometimes the shovel has a whisp hanging off of the tip top of the tail.

If a person just goes by the “boneyness” they’ll likely be taking home a laker.

Mike, I walked down to the dock to check on them and the gentleman said it was a prop issue and he was going to change the prop and go back out. Good for them!

Ya Brian I have caught my fair share of them both lake and shovelnose but I always wonder about some getting them confused though

It appears the nose is a bit longer also than that of a laker….is it???
