Does anyone know if there is a set year for Diesel engines in pick-ups that all the new epa requirements will have to be met by? I know that in some comercial vehicles 2007 brought alot of changes that really cut back on fuel economy. Is the same set to happen for everything else?

The way I understand, all Pick-ups 2007 and newer, are Ultra Low sulfur fuel. Government mandated. Bigger rigs, semi’s and such are to follow shortly.

I knew that was true with the 2007 CAT’s but are the 2007 and newer Pick-ups going to see a big loss in fuel mileage because of the ULSD?

Supposedly, they can breathe easier, and allow more options for exhausting, to where it should actually improve in most situations… from what Dodge tells us anyways. We have sold a few here, but haven’t heard any feedback yet. i am guessing, if mileage went down , I will get an earful soon.

Not to argue, but I have a hard time believing anything can flow better through that mess they have under the trucks now. It’s almost rediculous how complex a simple exhaust system has become. But, who would know better than the company trying to sell a truck, right?

The new style Chevrolet’s now have the particulate filters as well. You’d have to get the “old style”, which look exactly like the 2006’s, to get one without the emissions stuff.

My ’06 Chevy has the cat and EGR valve from the factory, but that’s all. (insert “had” for “has”)

And the Ford has a system that allows you to start small brush fires when it goes through it’s mode of burning out the particulate filter. Great for starting bonfires and lighting your cigar. But they’ve already recalled that. There is a video on youtube somewhere showing the fireball.

So is all diesel fuel at the pumps going to be the new stuff? Or is it going to be like E85 where only certain stations have it? Can old trucks run on the new fuel, apparently new trucks cannot run on the old?

My understanding is all diesel now is ULSD. For those of you running diesels, the cloud point for the ULSD is a about 20 degrees, where the old diesel would cloud point was closer to 0 to 10 degrees. Your filters could wax up in with just a small cold snap.
It would be wise to carry some Power Service “911” just in case you started to gel up.
