Quit feeding the birds and squirrels! RATS

If your one of those folks that like to leave a heap of food around for all critters to enjoy… it can have its consiquences(sp?)

Recently, I heard a rustle in a trash bag in our basement.. I figured it was a mouse which isnt that uncommon(cat gets one about once a year that tries to get in)… much to my surprise, I carefully shifted the trash bag and a large RAT came shooting out of the bag and shot under the work bench! In 30 years of family owning this house in Minneapolis, we seen one rat 15+ years ago that the dog promptly killed.. rats are not common. Needess to say, I set traps in strategic locations around our basement, the 1st night we got the culprit(so I thought) which was a large, obviously mature rat(yuck) 2 nights ago. Since then, the traps have caught 3 more slightly larger than a mouse(young rats), all about the same size.

Needless to say, we figured a *mom* got in, and had a litter. We investigated further to see where these thigs got into the house and we discovered the floor drain cover had been lifted up in the basement, and this was the same place the 1st one came in many years ago… we re-covered it, and put a 30# chunk of lead on the lid… all taken care of right?

It wasnt long after, my sister went outside to do her usual feeding of the animals.. the next thing we knew she was running through the yard with a lawn ornament(using the spike as a weapon), and a flower pot Soon the huntress got her kill… a small RAT at the same time, she made claim she seen another one when in pursuit of the 1st. She investigated the area further after baiting an area with fresh bird and squirrel food.. it took 5 minutes to have another small rat come to the offering Th rat ran as soon as it learned of her presence… it didnt go back to the hole in the ground we learned of when it came out by our retaining wall.. it ran into a small crack in the concrete foundation of our porch… jumped about 3′ in the air, and shot right in the tiny hole… it knew that entry well.

Where the rats are coming from outside.. I have no idea. I supected the heart of our problem(in the house) was our floor drain, but now I am not positive.. something lifted up the cover. The rats are obviously attracted to the bird food and squirrel food outside as there is lots of activity out there all of a sudden

We have done all we can do short of hiring an exterminator. We got rid of all the food outside, we will be doing a heavy cleaning of the basement and placing more traps(poison is not an option) although there isnt any food down there to speak of, and I will be heading to Home Depot to come up with stuff to fill any entry point in the house we an find that a mosquito could fit through. There is no food out in the house.. even our bread is in the fridge.

Anybody ever experience these things or know what else we can do besides poison? These critters literally showed up overnight and its not cool! I am hoping with the food source gone, and any burrough(sp?) we can find taken care of, these things will dissapear back to where they came from, or go bother someone else because we have nothing to offer. The neighbors complained that their cat was catching rats just a few days before in their house.. are the neighbors the source of the problem?

I was thinking about it, and I have been seeing rats regulrly at the river anywhere near storm drains the last few years.. this was not very common in the past. Is there a rat infestation going on in our sewers?

    Dave,

I bet you have one or more nieghbors who may “leave thier bread outside of the fridge”, and probably worse
My advise, time to go. For your sanity, the farther the better.
    Good luck

Have you tried fishing for them? it sounds like the hook-up rate might be pretty good around the edges of the retaining wall

I honestly hope so! I dont like my neighbors too much anyhow.. so if the nasty things want to relocate to their residence… more power to them!

Words cant describe how disgusted I am wth having these things around… I havent outruled sitting in the front yard with a small pile of bait with a pellet gun… however, I dont think that would be quite as funny as my 300#+ sister with 2 weapons chasing down a baby rat

Well.. I am off to find the mop bucket and some bleach to mop the floor…. YUCK… no signs of any droppings or anything else I have found.. but just knowing they have been passing through is too much.

Not to disapoint you in anyway because this may not be true. But I heard on the news once a while back when they interviewing an exterminator and he said if you see 1 rat there’s 70. I don’t know how true this but for your sake I hope it’s not. I do know for a fact that they can chew through concrete and can jump up to 6ft in the air and also very good swimmers. That I learned on the discovery channel.
Good luck on getting rid of them. I’d think they’d move on if there’s no food. I’d let everyone in the neiborhood to keep all dog food and bird seed indoors for a while. Catch a few in a live trap and go muskie fishing!

WOW, that would seriously suck. If this would happen in my house, I can asure you that I would be living alone. My wife has the absolute worst rodent fobia ever. Good luck, I personaly like the pellet gun idea.

I saw a post of some guys shooting ground squirrels with their bows, taking on your rats might be like a safari for them, you know – Big Game Hunting. You should see if you could get a hold of them. It would be better than the Dave Attell show when he was out driving around in New Orleans shooting the Nutria in the canals.

I would use a live trap. Once you have enough bait, I’d use a 10/0 Gamakatsu hook, 80# Power Pro, and head to the lake.

    Hmmm, live top water presentation.

David, there are lots of rats in sewer systems, its the storm drains that hold them mostly but they will go anywhere to get away from the winter cold. I seen a rat one time that i know went 10 pounds run down the street and right into a storm drainage system. Besides rats alot of racoons live in the storm drains too but its the rats that bother me too. From what i know thier probably coming up through the drains, a rat is fairly strong and i can see it lifting up the cover plate in your basement. From what i know rats like to live around some kind of water thats why its easy to see them running the river banks, storm sewers. Owls and snakes eat them so don’t get rid of any snakes around the house, they keep the mice down too. I don’t like too poison them because they go to thier dens, die then stink the whole house up so i set traps. Traps will eventually get them all, i use cheese.

back when I was just a kid I used to enjoy shooting them.. though I was able to use a 22 instead of a pellet gun.. (back on the farm).. one time I used poison.. there were dead rats everywhere.. particularly in the walls… PU!!.. since that time Ive found that traps will wipe them out…. might take a little longer.. but you will get them all…

Rats and Bushy Tailed Tree Rats are pretty smart. (Always said if them tree rats didn’t have a “cute” bushy tail, they’d all be dead! ) Anyway, after you get the first one, leave it laying around dead for a day or two so the others get a good look at ‘em. They do seem figure it out….. Lots of tree rats across the street, no tree rats in my yard. They just need to be reminded a couple time a year who is boss!

Every spring I get a bunch of the new stupid tree rats who think they can hang out in my yard, get into my shed and garage to set up shop. I blap ‘em and leave one or two laying on the fence for a couple days. The others get the idea pretty fast.

Now, before anyone starts getting’ on me, the only enjoyment I get is knowing they won’t be wrecking something on my property. The dang things are way over populated here inside the 494 loop. No predation except for cars. Warm winters and lot of bird feeders equate to an explosion of rats and tree rats. And I can’t agree with you more… QUIT FEEDING THE RODENTS!

Anyone need some squirrel tails for tying bucktails? Shoot me a PM.

Only way I am using a live trap is if there is a pre-rigged explosive in the trap that is set to go after its caught! My mind has been wandering on new trap ideas after the 1st rat(momma)… she tripped the trap and must have been coming onto it from the wrong end… It triggered and launched it like a catapault(sp?) into one of the 4×4 legs on the workbench a couple feet away and knocked it out(or killed it?) It was still twitching so I played it safe and finished it off with a 4×4 laying near by… So.. a new trap idea.. the Ratapault! It triggers the trap and gets launched into a near by wall at a high rate of speed.. place a wastepaper basket below the impact spot and you never have to handle the rat! Sounds good to me!

hmmm… that long handled BBQ utensil looks like a great launch pad! I’ll bet it would work great if rigged to the spring of the clay pigeon thrower! Just be sure to aim it at a concrete wall.. not drywall(might put the rat through the wall). It would be good for outdoor use too.. we could launch rats up to 100 yards! Wouldnt that be a sight to see? If I put one of them in my front yard, I could shoot the rats over to Burger King!

The basement area that is open and accessable to the rats is only a small laundry area(10′ x 14′), and a tool/workbench area that is about 10′ x 22′. We have had 4 traps out since this started a few days ago, and caught 5.. 1 momma, 4 mid size (babies?) all the same size… Nothing in the traps last night. I have a bit of sorting to do in the basement, and 6 more traps to add(last home depot had in stock ). I would have to think a relatively open area, not that big in the 1st place.. 10 traps should be overkill. I know the cat couldnt walk through the basement without getting stuck before long.

If they keep showing up in the yard, I’ll sit on the roof of the porch with a pellet gun and put some bait out! Being that I am in South Minneapolis… I’ll hang a sign on the door stating BB GUN PEST CONTROL so I dont get taken off the roof by a sniper! I could see the lineup of cop cars now and film crews from the local news and video of me from he telephoto lense on post waiting for rats.

That “ratapault” idea gave me a big laugh. I’ve seen videos of people doing that to tree rats with a clay pigeon thrower and water balloon sling shots.
My parents had a HUGE problem with mice last year in Sandstone, MN. The local stores were always out of traps and poison ect… Guess everyone in the area had the same problem. Luckly the had the problem outside and not in the house because my Dad would’ve came home to no wife. Anyway a guy at my work told me if they have the problem next year to take a 5 gallon bucket and string a wire tightly across the top and put peanut butter on the wire while the bucket has water in the bottom of it. Mice will keep licking the wire while on it and soon fall into the water and drown. He said they’d kill 10-15 a night at their cabin.
Now I know a 5 gallon bucket might not work for rats because they might be able to climb or jump out but maybe if you had a old tub or 50 gallon drum. This is just to give you some more thinking tools to think about. If you end up inventing a rat killer and become a millionare send me a case of beer!

We do the 5 gallon bucket trap at the cabin. Works very well (on mice)!

I agree the launcher is pretty funny!

I wish I had the video camera rolling with my sister running around the yard with a lawn ornament spike and a flower pot

I dont think a pitbull would have hung around for any of that action

I dont want to get my hopes up too quickly, but the traps are no longer catching anything and there have been no more signs of activity.. can my luck be canging for the better for a change?

    Dave,

I was thinking live trap, then throw a hook through one and let it kick and struggle on the surface of the water. How could a flathead resist
