Can these be “backed up” or copied to ones computer?

They do not recommend it, other than that I do not know anyone that has done it.

    Yes.

Its probably not worth the risk of damaging the card which has happened to people trying to copy the Chip with a card reader Navionics will not replace it if you damage it trying to do this.

Your backed up image would be pretty much useless you can’t write it back to any blank SD Card.
The only supposed benefit would be if something happened to your card you may be able to write the image back to the original card, never heard of it happening though and I don’t believe it would work.

The owner of LM explained it this way.

The data on the cards are tied to the card it’s self. You can copy the data off the card to your hard drive…then if something were to happen to the data on your original card…it can be copied back…to the original card.

So…if you loose the original card…trying to place the data file from your hard drive onto a new card…won’t work.

I think I just said the same thing Pier did.

The Navionics chip is more likely to bomb “ruin card no warranty” then the Lakemaster Chip is when trying to copy it to your hard drive.
    I wouldn’t do it personally.
