Gun-care question

I’m looking for a little “southern” information for my son who moved to Florida this past April. He lives in Melbourne, right on the beach, and has two of his hunting guns down there with him. He was telling me that every time he looks at them, he has to wipe surface rust off them. He said he keeps them oiled quite heavily and they still show some surface rust. What is the secret to keeping them rust-free in that humidity, and I’m sure the salty environment has a lot to do with it too. Hopefully there is someone on here that may have had some experience with this problem.

I know guys that put them in plastic cases that have the foam sprayed down heavily with wd-40. that is what they do, I have never really looked at thier guns, but then agian, I am not a fan of wd-40 near my guns.

See if he can get some silica gel, you know, like those little packets they pack in with any tools. I’m sure there are places to get it in bulk if he has a cabinet, or start saving all the little packets and put them in the gun case with the gun. Their purpose is to act like a miniature dehumidifier.

I remember a certain sock that is available for this purpose. I believe you either slide the gun in the sock and then into the case or just the sock, I am not sure. I would think Cabela’s, Gander, etc. must have them.

I do know what that salty/humid air can do to metals. I lived in Daytona for a year and both my motorcyles had extensive damage to steel and especially the aluminum parts. I had to replace some parts when I came back to Minnesota and get others polished.

Gun grease would be another good option, but be advised that it is messy (ie gotta wipe them down before using them)
