Interesting.
I’m sure they (The DNR) have figured Kinetic Energy equations to make sure 30lbs of draw will still penetrate and kill Large Game animals. However, this seems like it is awfully low in my opinion. As I have seen some 40lb bows that “seem” like they are on the low end of the Oomph scale. You are decreasing the required weight by 25%. That seems drastic.
I understand this might be a ploy to get the youth involved and I’m all for that, but not when it means wounding animals. I would like to hear more on this. You have any other info?
Good Thread
Yes, MN. Here’s a copy from the outdoor news. I agree with you…seems a little light but I’m sure the research is there… somewhere.
New fish and game laws on the way

New 30 lbs bows today probably produce more energy then the old 50 lbs bows. I think the DNR sees it as way to get kids into bowhunting, which is a good thing. I think when I started bow hunting was pulling back 35 lbs.
It would seem like a good idea to put restrictions on the types of broadheads used for bows of this draw weight.
Cut on impact styles – fixed blade would certainly help with penetration with the reduced energy vs. expandables.
I’m not totally opposed to it but a 30 yd shot is going to be tough at 30lbs. your looking at a serious rainbow and the time it takes to get there the deer could move a couple feet. I thing this will lead to more injured animals
I think it will also lead to less practice for the kids. the easier it is the less they will have to practice to gain the back muscle strength.
I get the concept but think there are other ways to get youth involved.
I’d rather see them increase the let off.
I agree with both Scott and Bucky…..but one can achieve enough KE with a 30#lb draw. My 9 yo is currently pulling 25- 27 #lbs from a Bowtec rascal and is definitely pushing arrows over 200 fps with 8 gr./ inch arrow….if you put him down to a 6 gr./inch arrow with a 65 gr. broadhead, he will putting out close to 25 ft-lbs of KE…enough to kill a deer. However, max. range with those numbers should not exceed 20 yds in my opinion. Heck, with good shot placement, 15 ft-lbs of KE would be enough to kill a deer….key word for any archer….good shot placement.
30# is enough out of the modern compound bows as long as it is shooting a proper arrow for the bow. The broadhead does much more damage wen still in the deer compared to pass through shots(fixed blade).
If the research is there to prove it can work, I am all for it. In my opinion, this is the ONLY time I would not recommend an expandable broadhead to be used.
I am not sure I buy that the broadhead does more damage inside the deer than not. I would much rather have a clean pass thru anyday. This gives a drain hole for the blood to flow from. That makes an easier blood trail to follow and less likelyhood for the entrance hole to coagulate shut
I like a clean pass through myself, and I will say I don’t see a problem with the change.
I would like to think the people/kids this is attracting, is only because someone with knowledge is getting them interested. I think there are a lot of Pop’s out there that will teach the ethics, make sure there equipment is matched to make a clean kill, and enjoy some time in the field with there kid! It will also be great for the small framed ladies out there that like the sport. It is never good to try and pull more than what you can comfortably hold to aim, in my opinion.
I think you hit the nail on the head Bret , I would think if you are teaching the kids and ladies to take reasonable shots (20 yds or less) match the right arrows to the equipment and be responsible enough to practice so you can consistently make a clean shot,It may be a good way to introduce the younger kids, wives, and girlfriends to the sport. I would rather see a kid double lung a deer with 30 lbs than a cowboy sooting a deer in the guts at 300 fps.
