I am looking to experiment with some food plots for deer on my land near Baudette this year and would like to find some alphalpha and maybe oat seeds to plant. Man are seed co-op’s and such hard to find online?? (User error maybe ) I live in Burnsville, but I’m wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to get some from on my way up north on Friday, maybe a couple of acres worth. I was thinking something in the Grand Rapids or Aitkin area? Otherwise something locally in the cities?

I would be greatful for any help I can get

    If you are in Burnsville,
just road trip down to Cenex in Hampton (Hwy 56 and 250th street).

They have what you need. 25 minute drive at the most.

You may want to try Winter Wheat first up there. By the time deer season rolls around your clover and alfalfa will be pretty hard already. Just a suggestion.

I called Cenex, they dont have alphalpha. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Scott, I have thought about winter wheat too, but there are fields of it very close and we have found that the stomach content of most of the deer we harvest have more alphalpha then anything alse, even that far north in rifle season. Interesting based on thier options?? AND, the alphalpha fields close to my property are in pretty poor shape, so a fresh planing just may be the ticket (I hope)

I am also going to experiment with some of those specific deer plot seeds (clover ect), but the ones I want to try are mid-summer planting seeds and I want something to plant while I’m up playing in the dirt this weekend.

Contact the local Sheriff’s department up there. I have heard that some of the places are giving away seed for deer food plots in Northern Minnesota. I believe it was throught the Sheriff’s department, but I could be wrong. Maybe a local CO up there would help you out as well if that rumor is in fact true.

I guess call me ignorant, but I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting a grain elavator before. They sell to the public, not just retailers? And I can get small quantities?

    Thanks much Mallard !

I called the DNR wildlife office out of Grand Rapids and found that I can get it at a farm supply store right on Hwy 2 in Grand Rapids. Plus they gave me some pointers I may have overlooked.

That’s great. What were some of the pointers they gave?? The conditions are pretty tough up there for food plots and maybe we could learn a little something.

One thing he said was to get the soil tested prior to planting becasue many of the soils in that area are too high of acidity. I knew that, but wasnt planning on testing it becasue there is alphalpha planted in that spot now (its just old and not thriving), but I may now.

The other big thing that I was completely unaware of is that they recommend mowing clover and alphalpha in late summer becasue it will regenerate better and faster. If it works out, I will let a local take it as hay.

We’ll see how good of farmer I am soon

my dad and I did some food plots on our land in park rapids, we did clover, rutti baggies and winter wheat, the dear have them patches down to dirt and then some. also you might want to put out a molases block or apple lick for them as well, we will disolve ours and pour it over a dead stump and the deer will eat that stump all the way down to the roots.

If you plan to hunt over your plots plan your last cutting in early August. That way they will be green again and attractive to the deer by the time hunting season rolls around.
