Anyone have any advice on how to make sure buyers on the classified ads are legit? I received a response I am pretty sure is a scam (wanting to overpay for an item and wanting extra money sent back to them). Just wondering if anyone else has had any problems or what to do to protect oneself?

Do a search about the member on IDA. Guys that have been here awhile are mostly good guys. If they only have a few posts well thats were it gets hard to decide about them. A gut feeling is a good thing to listen to.Quote:

Any thing like that is a SCAM. Do not deal with them.May 17, 2007 at 8:25 pm #572327I generally wouldn’t worry about a site like this, but anytime you go on others which mailny have to do with buying and selling you really have to watch it…Look for poor broken English and anybody that claims to have a shipper set up to pick the item up. The tell you they are going to overpay and to write the difference to the shipping company. Well that money comes out of your account and 2 days later, after your item is gone the bank figures out it was a phony check…I make it a habit to ONLY deal with local people and meeting in person with CASH
May 17, 2007 at 8:27 pm #572328That scam is an older one and has been around a while. But other then knowing the person I would not do it. I am sure they bad apples will find there way here for sure. I have got a lot of stuff here and have never had any trouble or given any trouble. Hope we dont start to have problems.
May 17, 2007 at 8:33 pm #572332I have a banker in the family that says to not take a cashiers check from a bank either. Too many fraudulent checks without a way to verify funds. I prefer to use cash or cash, but if really in a bind, cash is prefered

May 17, 2007 at 8:42 pm #572340Chances are the check will be returned to you, after you sent him cash and now you owe the bank the money.
May 17, 2007 at 8:58 pm #572350Any thing short of them showing up at your door with cash is a scam.

Not always, I have dealt with many transactions on IDA and they have all been super smooth. You just need to be sure who you are dealing with

Most of the guys here are top quality. I recently bought a few DVDs from St. Croixer. I had the tapes before he had his payment I would not want to trust me

Wait for the check to clear completely before shipping the item.
My company often requires other legitimate companies to pay up front before we ship stuff out. It is not an unreasonable request for a seller to require prepayment. If they say “No” then just don’t close the deal. Nobody get’s hurt.
May 18, 2007 at 12:59 pm #572515DON’T DO IT— CASH or Cashiers CHECK for amount only….don’t fall in the trap I fell into trusting people
May 18, 2007 at 1:30 pm #572528I would avoid even a cashiers check. They are easy to fabricate and have caused headaches for many.
Cash or (although not always foolproof)Paypal.May 18, 2007 at 2:31 pm #572547Here’s a tip with cashier’s checks. Use 411 on your cell phone to get the phone number of the bank branch on the check. Then, you can ask them to verify the cashier’s check. I wouldn’t just call the phone number on the check — look up the number yourself to make sure you are talking to the bank and not a scam artist.
May 18, 2007 at 5:58 pm #572610I see these questions asked over and over again, who do you trust and how do you take payment?
My simple rule is this…………
“In God I trust, you pay cash.”
May 20, 2007 at 1:51 pm #572871That scam is older than the hills. I will accept a personal check on the order that it clears the bank first before items are sent out. It takes a little time but well worth the hassel in the long run. If a check is not a option they will travel too me with cash. I do not accept cashier’s checks. You even have too verify a check written from a bank to make sure it is a good check. I have never had any problems from this site either.
