I-pods

I’m really out of touch in the “technology field”.
Give me a computer, and I’ll find a way to break it and have no clue what I did wrong…..

So, my daughter wants an I-Pod for her B-day.
She is turning 13, so I really don’t want to spend a lot of this, as the life expectancy from a 13yr old is probably going to be short……

I see at Wally World, they have a little one for $75. Holds something like 240 songs.

Then you can upgrade to another model that is about $190.

Then they have the video player I-Pod that runs about $225.

Is this $75 model something that is “decent”?

Next stupid question……..You download the music from your computer to these Ipods, right? Does these Ipods come with all the needed “accesories” to do the downloading, or do you have to buy that separate?

This is what I’m referring to.
    I Pod

Is there anything better that has a decent price?

Gary, I would upgrade and go with the Nano. It is $149 but well worth it. She will fill up the Shuffle in no time. As far as downloads, you just have to download iTunes onto your computer and start buying away. It is usually .99 a song. You can buy iTune cards anywhere or you can use your credit card and put money in your account, If you have any more questions just ask, I also have a 13 year old daughter and just went through all of this, lol.

My wife uses iTunes on our PC to upload songs to her iPod. I bought here the iPod Nano. I believe it was a 2gig Nano. The video iPod is a little over-the-top to me.

Amazon.com has the 2gig Nano on sale for $146.99. To me that would be your best route.

    OK!
    I’m learning here……..

    I-Tunes……
That is what/where you download songs onto the Ipod?

    Is there an I-Tune website?

(told ya I don’t know crap about this stuff……. )

My wife broke her 2 gig iPod($199 new, now $149) and replaced it with an $60 MP3 player and actually likes it better. I found the Microsoft Media player a little easier to use than the iTunes software. Also, it is easier to use multiple MP3 players that multiple iPods on the same software. Plus, it has a radio, for what that is worth.

If you can affort it I would go with the large memory. At 13 she will probably be listening to more music, not less in the future. The vidio piece is cool, at least my kids say so. i dont use this feature, I have over 6,000 songs on mine and have filled up 2/3 of the memory.

You can import cds you have as well. There are other sites that you can download music cheaper.

    Gary,

I would opt for the largest memory you can get for a 13yr old IMO as well.
Another simple feature is that if you have CD’s at home, simply plop them into the CD player on your PC and have your Ipod plugged in. Once you plug in your Ipod, it will open up the itunes website and you can place the songs off your CD right to your Ipod and pick and choose the songs you want to put on. Pretty simple! After you do it once, it will become very easy to understand.

    Good luck!

    Gary:

My kids (9 & 7) and wife have the smaller $75 ipods. They are just fine. Easy to use and download to. My girls do complain that they can’t see the list of songs to choose so they have to “page” through and listen to the first 3 secs of each song to see if they want to stop and listen or keep paging.

I have the Nano (gift from work for Xmas). It has the screen so you can create playlists (one for workouts, one for easy listening, etc.) It also stores pictures and is pretty cool all around. I would strongly recommend getting the protective carrying case/cover for the Nano. Many varieties to choose from. Target has many and are slightly cheaper than buying direct from Apple.

Many people are also insuring these things. Some stores sell warranties and others I’ve heard are putting them as additions to their home policies. If you go Nano or higher in terms of cost, also a good suggestion.

For a teenager, I’d go with the Nano as a minimum. The video screen on the higher end models will really score you points with the kids (they’ll see it as a status item which unfortunately, is important for teenagers, much like the red swoosh Nike’s were in my day). If you’re worried about breakage or loss, or as my wife did, putting them through the wash machine, by the extended warranties or insure them.

Pm with questions! Itunes is pretty cool and easy to use.

I would definetely buy the Nano or the Video. As far as the i-Tunes go, your daughter will figure that out in a few minutes. The program comes with the I-Pod when you buy it. Good luck!

I will start this with most of what I say here is MOP …now that I’ve said that. I would suggest the 2 G Nano myself I have the older version and have been VERY pleased with it. Infact I prefer the 2 G over my brother inlaws much larger 40 G he stores all of his music on there and honestly I have never had a use for ALL of my music. part of the fun of it is making playlist, and with kids today they change thier mind in 30 seconds anyways and like new songs. so they can just get rid of the songs they don’t want on the Ipod it’s self anymore. Also the # of songs held can be VERY misleading. It’s dependant 2 main things, lenght of song quality of the song. You can set Itunes which comes on a CD to automatically set your songs up to the quality you want. Much like a digital camera the better the quality doesn’t exactly make a difference to most people there is a point at which most people stop noticing. I would however try to locate a hard case if you do get the nano just for a little more support to the product it’s self. I have wittnessed 3 people forgetting that it’s in a back pocket and sit down on it! they don’t last long that way. If you have any other questions feel free to shoot me a PM and I’ll help with what I can. ok time to catch my breath that turned out Much longer than I thought it would. sorry for being soo windy.

That is why I want to go the cheaper route with this, being it is her first.

Now, the cheaper model doesn’t have a display screen, so you have to manually scroll through the music to find your song. Can you put your songs in order when you down load them from the computer? Meaning, when I’m plugged into the computer, can I see what is on the IPOD?

Seems like not having a display screen is a major drawback?

When you plug the ipod into the computer, your song list will show up and in order. You then can manipulate the order.

You can’t put them in a certain order, that they will play in. the $75 Ipod is reffered to as the shuffle. which is exactly what it does it will always shuffle the play list. where as any of them that have a screen that is an option. I know people who like/have both versions. It’s really a personal prefferance. Honestly I would say most people make a play list but end up putting it on shuffle anyways so I wouldn’t say it’s a draw back. Infact when I’m in car or even on the bout, or in the clam it’s always on shuffle and I just skip though the songs I don’t want to listen to and I hardly ever use my screen, unless I’m just going to go to another play list entirely, well other than to tell time when fishing. but shhh don’t tell my wife. I leave the watch at home on purpose! I think either way you go she’ll just be happy to have one. and will live just fine with what ever features she doesn’t have and then wonder why they even have those features on other modles. I know I have.

I think it’s 19.99 for a lifetime membership on Limewire for unlimited downloads. One time payment and unlimited songs. much better deal than I-tunes. Just make sure your anti-virus is up to date.

i have the 4g nano and it came with the headphones and the usb cable to plug it in to the computer and it gives you a website to download itunes and i think i have like 700 songs on it but itunes is a little confussing at first but i bet your daughter can figure it out i use limewire to download my music and it works pretty good but itunes will give you cd quality music as where limewire you can’t garuntee the quality but you have to have itunes to put music on your ipod

i love my ipod! i wanted one with a bigger memory so i could fit all my music on there but i never listen to it all at once so a smaller one is fine for me

I went to taget and got a MP3 and also use the limewire for 18.88 for the whole year, I have downloaded probably about 600 songs so far and well I have only played $18.88 instead of the .99 a tune. I also hold 117 songs on it and can get a 1 gig card to put in it that will hold more music. came with the cord for the computer and automatically downloads them after making a playlist on windows media player.

There are free sites out there where people share songs with each other. Bearshare is one of many. There is a free version or a $ version. Download and go to town. Just a thought…Ted

I’m still a bit leery of any file-sharing services like Limewire. I know there are a lot of lawyers fighting over this issue, and I don’t want to hire one for myself.
