Mille Lacs Landing

I just want you all to know that we went to get off of Mille Lacs on Saturday night around 10:30 and we didn’t get out of the water until 12:57!! We were at Phil’s Myr Mar Landing and I guess the other 250 vehicles that were parked in the grass thought they should get off the lake at the same time. Honestly, we waited in the harbor for over 2 hours. When we finally made it to a dock to have someone go and get the truck. They were the 16th vehicle back coming from one direction, and you know you take turns with the people from the other direction as well. We pulled out of the water at 12:57. If anybody else was there, wasn’t the guy trying to get the pontoon out great !! He spent about 35 minutes and scraped up the boat and crushed his trailer.
At $10 per rig, I think they made thousands this weekend, but the DNR doesn’t think we need any more “good” public landings. WOW

lol Of course, now that I am on a mission to force the Trails and Waterways division to “get it right”–as they promised, I will forward your comments and experiences to the Commissioner and the heads of the division.

If Myr Mar couldn’t handle the situation/crowds, can you imagine dealing with the same situation at Ray’s Boat Dock site where the water is 1-2 ft. deep and the harbor is less than HALF the size of Myr Mar’s.

With the 10 pm. ban in place and many of the Public Accesses too shallow for windy conditions(no matter the year), your experience will become the norm unless a couple MAJOR access sites are built with breakwaters in place, deep water(dredged) and ample parking in a lot …NOT along miles of road shoulders.

Where? Pike Point for one. The State Park for another in Isle. North of Fishers at the Malmo site would work with dredging and breakwater as well. ALL land already owned by the state, no neighborhood problems, no costly hiway issues, room for endless expansion.

They said…”we’ll get it right”. “We are professionals”. I heard that countless times. So far—a million plus $$ at Liberty Beach and another million earmarked for Ray’s, and they have done NOTHING “right”.

I DARE Mark Holsten, Laurie Martinson, Forest Boe and Lowell Jaeger to launch and retrieve their boats at ANY of these sites in the wind at 10 PM. on any given night.

Of ALL the states I travel to and launch my boat, Mn. has the WORST access plan in place for the major fisheries.

Is it just my imagination, or are there innumerable examples where the MN DNR has built a public access on the shallowest, worst possible part of a lake? I can think of a dozen examples right off the top of my head. Myrtle and Elephant Lake near Orr. Clearwater. Is it because they can buy that land cheaper than surrounding areas? Or is it easier to build a ramp in a shallow area?

I hope the DNR does not write tickets to people trying to get off now!

If you wanted to see a real mess, you should have seen all the issues at the Wealthwood landing after the wind came up out of the East. I backed in there Saturday about noon, my boat didn’t even get wet! Sure could have used a bit of dredging. Doc’s was real shallow,(16 inches) heard of a guy in a big Ranger having some real issues. Lyeback’s (spelling?) was awesome. (2.4 feet)

Cove bay public access is really shallow. especially from power loading. could really use dredging. the only thing cove bay has going for it – is that it is protected from all winds.

I didn’t even attempt to try a public this opener. Fisher’s was in great shape.

Cedar Creek is bad. If they would remove the 5 rocks at the end of the dock, it wouldnt be so bad.

We dropped in there Friday night with our 18′ Starcraft. It wasn’t real easy, but we jerked/push/slid it off. Like you guys said, you had to be really careful at the end with some rocks right around the little hole there.

We’re hosed if it gets any shallower. I’m praying for a deluge of rain (when I’m not up there, of course)!

How was the Garrison or Myr Mar public accesses? Anyone have problems at either location with a bunk trailer?

I was at Phil’s Myr Mar landing and by the looks of the people, I would say the public landings at Wealthwood, Myr Mar and Garrison could not have been too busy.

I hear that! Unfortunately, it’s so dang shallow by the docks I’m not even sure if you could get a decent size boat on a lift.

That being said, we don’t even HAVE a lift for ours right now … ask me how i feel about that!
