Sometimes IDA is used to gripe about other boaters/anglers who are inconsiderate jerks and ruin a good day on the water. Today I’d like to do just the opposite.
I was fishing with my son four-year-old son Gavin at Goose Island here on Pool 8. It was a beautiful day and Mom wanted the boys out of the house so she said, “Why don’t you guys go fishing for a few hours so I can have some peace and quiet.” We had the boat hooked up and were out of the driveway almost before she completed her request.
Gavin’s Zebco was rigged up with a bobber and minnow and he was fishing out of the back of the boat. I didn’t notice that he let the current take his bobber way out behind us right in the path of two younger guys in a flat-bottom boat going by. His line got hung up on the boat and Gavin thought he had the fish of a lifetime on. I yelled and waved at the boat and they quickly figured out what happened and shut it down. Not only did they stop, but they untangled the mess and made sure I had it reeled up before they took off again. They had every right to be cross at us, but they just smiled and waved goodbye.
So thanks to all of you who’ve ever shown patience and understanding to others on the water. Today that kind of attitude allowed Gavin and me to remember the fun we had, and not a confrontation.
