I have a F 150 with the ext cab, the back seat is getting small for the bigger son.

I have been pondering the Super Crew type cab, I dont want a heavy duty type truck, what I do like about the ext cab is the 6 1/2′ box.

The SC type trucks have a 5 1/2′ box, Ford does offer a 6 1/2′ SC but I am thinking of switching brands and they dont offer a 6 1/2′.

So do you find the 5 1/2′ adequete?

I drive a 1500 Dodge Ram, 4X4, 4 door with a long (8′) bed. Love the truck, but the turning radius is sometimes a problem in parking lots. That long wheel base doesn’t let you make any tight turns, but at the same time, it does smooth out the ride some.

Last I looked (2005), Dodge was the only maker you could get a half ton 4X4 with both 4 doors and an 8′ bed.

Might have issues with a four wheeler in the back of a 5 1/2 bed

I just bought a Nissan Frontier supercab.. lots of room in the back. and this year they came out with “the long bed”.. which is right around 6 feet.. and then they have the bed extender.. which Ive found usefull.. basically its just a deal where you drop the tail gate and they have this swivel gate which plops down and keeps things from sliding out.. it actually works pretty well. and I use it alot.. the frontier is also a great ride… I tested a number of trucks that size and this was my favorite…

I have a four door 05 chev. It has a 5 1/2 ft box. I can still tote my 14′ duck boat in it with a flag on the back. I have not found any time when I needed a larger box with the exception of hauling goose decoys and then I could use a 20′ box.

I have a 2006 chevy crew cab with a 6 1/2 box. My daughter is 13. We do alot of camping and she brings a friend along most of the time. Plenty of room with crew cab.
Go with a 6 1/2 box. The 3 man ice hut fits in the back with the tail gate up. Plus if you ever want to get a 5 wheel camper, You will want at least a 6 1/2 box for turning clearance.

Kirt, I have a 2006 Ford F150 SC with the smaller box. It does everything I need it to do so far, but if you can get the 6.5 foot box I would. I love the 4 doors. With two kids and a dog to haul around, we couldn’t do it otherwise.

I have an 03′ F150 4 door and love it! Even though the bed is 5’6″ long I have never had any issues with that size. I can put my 4 wheeler in it and the back wheels just barely go over the 5 1/2 ft mark so I have to leave the tailgate down. No biggee though for me. RR

Our last 2 tucks have been SC’s,5 1/2′ box. Both were, are great. The extra room on the SC is worth more to me than the longer box, the entire back seat is great space for dry gear. A few times I would have liked a longer box, but made due. When I had a long box there were times I could have used a longer box, so. A decent trailer is almost a must with the sc, especially if you decide to go topper and have a wheeler, ice house, etc. I really like the SC design, plenty of seating and the days I play contractor the box is long enough to do so.

I just went from a 6.75 box on the Super Duty Crew to a 5.5 on a 150 Crew. I have had no issues yet but have only had the truck 3 weeks. I do use a trailer for the bigger stuff. I do love the truck so far. Hardest part was going from Diesel to Gas. I can’t wait till the come out with the 150 diesel! Just didn’t need the bigger truck anymore. The question that I had to ask myself was the 3 times a year I pull the 30 foot camper did I need the diesel? That is the same thing you have to ask yourself about the box size as well. What do you use the most? There is more practicality in the crew for me then having the bigger truck or smaller cab. I don’t know why you would want to switch brands? I love my Fords and have looked at other brands as well but I always go back to what I know best and know what I am getting as far as quality and reliability! Good luck with your new purchase.

I am running a 04 chevy silverado 4 door. I can fit 3 car seats in the back with room for each. I also have a 4 ft bed, I don’t have a toper on my truck, looking to get a tonaue cover for it, I pull a 17 ft boat with no problems, ride is nice, lots of room, plenty of power with all of the family and boat. been pretty happy so far.

We have a topper, Jason, what the dealer called the “sportsman special”. Has the shelf going across the entire front with windoors on each side and screened sliders on each side in the rear. The windoors and shelf are great, If I need something often it goes on the shelf and has easy access. My dogs practically live back there on the traveling weekends and the screened sliders are great for providing ventilation.
