went out Thursday to remove my deer stands for the summer.I hunt 180 acres of private land, been hunting it for 18 years and never have had trouble. But yeah I know, times have changed. Got to my first tree, stand was gone. . I get to where my third stand was supposed to be,GONE. Out of five stands I get three. It just makes me sick that some people feel they don’t need to buy their own equipment when the woods are full of it for the taking. The only hunting these kind of people know is the hunting of us sportsmans equipment. From now on all my stands will havecable and locks on them. Not to say they still won’t steal them.I would love to have ten minutes with who ever got them.

I lost a 2 man ladder stand after Ia. gun season. It was only up for 10 days! And it was locked with a cable lock, all of it gone. . If I catch them with my stand it will not be pretty.

I lost a stand the past two years up in Burnett County, WI. The last one really threw me for a loop. I had a ladder stand that was locked onto the tree, and when I went to climb into my stand one morning, all I found was my tree had been chainsawed down, and my stand gone

Two many stands are being ripped off these days, I hope someone here can catch up with one of the that pull these stunts.

It’s too bad people have to stoop sooooo low! Probably same people who since they have a fourwheeler think they can drive across whoevers property they choose. Forget about getting more youngsters into the hunting and fishing and lets teach them to be true sportsmen and women first. Knock on wood I’ve been lucky as far keeping my equipment but have had my share of run ins with people who are probably quite capable! I feel your pain!!

wouldn’t that be more like satalight tracking? if everyone had one then it could be cheap, but that would be an expensive deal to get set up, I would think

Ya MN, old guys way of thinking sometimes. Imiagine a small insert that could be pushed up inside the tubeing and then capped, somewhere around the $20-$30 dollar mark?. If it was gone somewhere you could get it back via the thumping squad then the judge.

YA I’VE LOST A BUNCH TOO! AFTER THE FIRST TIME, I STARTED WITH A HAMMER AND PUNCH PUTTING MY NAME AND PHONE# ON THE FRAME. I ALSO REMOVE THE STEPS UP TO THE 8 FT AREA. HAVEN’T HAD ANY STOLEN SINCE. MATTER IN FACT HAD SOME DORK LEAVE HIS STEPS BEHIND AFTER HE SAW MY NAME STAMPED IN THE METAL. I OFTEN THOUGHT ABOUT LEAVING A STEP REAL LOOSE AT ABOUT 12 FT. AND CHECK-OUT THE EMERGENCY ROOM ADMITANCES. HAHA!

    – Yeah, then the criminal would find a good lawyer and sue you…..and win. I can almost see the headlines. I have also had a stand ripped off. If i ever find out who it was i will be doing some ripping off of my own.

A tracking devise could be resonably cheap to buy. A company could have it set up so when you need it and call the company to give you the location thats when they make thier money off you like a sixty dollar charge or something. I know thats not going to happen but a novel idea. Then you could afford to put one in each stand and only pay when you need it.

that would be a great thought, however if you reported it to the cops, all they would have to do is get a warrent , and go find it them selfs, so much for that company makeing any money

    good thought though

that was my concern. I do believe they are coming in from the road, so I would put it away from the stand. I also have the No-Flash, which I would say is a must for undercover work…

Yeah, no flash and placed where you think they’re coming in. Ideal spot would be if you know where they are driving/parking their vehicle.. LIC plate numbers may not prove who stole it but it would give you a good idea as to who’s butt to kick around.

In the fall of 05 I was going to set up another tree stand in the woods and while I was doing that my bow got jacked. I was hunting on a gravel road, and there were only a couple houses including the farmer whose land I was hunting. The road doesn’t see alot of traffic, and I had my bow in the back of the truck and never thought to take it out when I went to set-up the stand. I came back on my 4-wheeler to get my bow and head to a different stand and my bow was gone. I bet from the time I left the truck until I returned was a total of 10 minutes. I had my truck parked in a cornfield 30 yards off the road. I only wish I could have been coming out of the woods on my 4-wheeler when they were digging around in the back end of my truck. Anyways I have a pretty good idea of who the people are who took it, or may know something about it, but I’m just waiting for the right opportunity to pursue it. These are the same people who go trout fishing down in this area in December w/ live bait when the season is totally closed and there dumb enough to take pictures of the fish. Eventually they are going down. maybe they are a lurker here on IDA and will realize now that I know who they are

Our party had similiar occurances. Actually, this has happened to a few of my permanant stands. We used to hunt on public land between Mille Lacs and Hinkley. We were tucked way back into the woods, much deeper than others were willing to go, so we thought. My first year deer hunting, i was walking out before sunrise to my perm, got there and it was gone!! Looked at it after sunrise and found the nails on the ground and wood scattered around. Two years later, i had a great perm, on a hill looking down at a creek. I get two real nice deer on opening weekend. The next week, head out again, NO STAND! Was torn down again. We have always had success up there, but the parties near us do not. So i’m guessing out of jealousy, they tore my stands down. We have also brought up portables just for easy mobility, because the state has been logging out the woods, and deer have been moving around a lot. First year, we have a stand stolen during the week after opener. So we learned our lesson, and i welded chains to the stand and padlocked them to the trees the next year. This worked better, but unfortuantely after the second weekend, the chain was cut and the stand was gone. We had an idea who took em, but there was no way to prove it.

Since then, we gave up on these woods, and are now hunting in Park Rapids on my uncle’s property. Prime land and is surrounded by state land, so don’t have to worry about any thieves!(besides his driveway, it is atleast 10 mile hike through swampy, hilly, state woods from any road)
