OK… so I’m in a puzzlement … I really need (want) to pick up some more fishing gear – need a new rod or two, some rod holders, color sonar with GPS (maybe the new side imaging unit), new radio and speakers… the list is really quite endless.

The problem is that my wife probably won’t want me to spend any more money on this addiction of mine so here’s my question – whenever my wife buys something new for herself – a new top, new purse, new jacket, new shoes, whatever – and I say to her “Oh, dear, that XXX looks nice on you. Is it new? When did you buy that and how much was it?”, she always answers “Oh this old thing! I had this forever but just never wore it before….” or “I got this ages ago from my Mom/Sister/Friend/Goodwill/etc” (does she really think I don’t know what’s going on?!?!?! )

So here’s my question – would the same tactic work if the roles were reversed???

A buddy of mine is always buying stuff (guns, trolling motor etc) and when his wife asks he always says it is mine, she has fallen for it everytime

What Honey? This rod? No, it’s not new. I just switched reels from another rod and put some new line on it.

Your first mistake was the “Is that new? When did you get it, how much was it?” That’s just setting a bad precedent as what to do when something new is bought. Now you get to be on the receiving end. You should have been saying……..”Is that new? It looks great, you deserve something new.” IT’s a win – win situation.

Glenn, my suggestion is to stand up for yourself…be the man that runs the household…

If you want to spend your or HER money…as a man of the house you don’t need to explain.

If she doesn’t see things your way….

So how do you decide which is yours and which is HER’S? As soon as my paycheck hits the bank account – my money goes to pay the church offering, the retirement account, mortgage, car loan, electric, gas, trash, phone, cell phones, cable, high-speed, Y membership, insurance, private school and college tuition, her gas, my son’s gas, my gas, my son’s parking, my kids’ allowances, clothing allowances, etc and her portion goes to her checking account….

When her paycheck hits the account, it goes to her checking account…

(Brian, I’m with you… I sure as heck hope she never reads this post!!! )

This is how women think of it. I only know because I have heard it many times. ” My money is her money and her money is her money.” I just go out buy what I want and give her the recipt and leave it at that. Yeah she gets mad but she gets over it.

Definately use the Garage Logic 48 hour rule, Apparently she has done it to you many times!!!

Never thought of the direct deposit thing before. Most employers who have Direct deposit will deposit a set amount or percentage into different accounts. So if you use direct deposit, Set up a different bank acct for yourself, and then have your employer deposit $100 bucks or whatever a month into that account and the remainder of you paycheck into your regular acct. Should work, and then whether or not the wife knows about it or not is your business

    Good Luck

This is how it works here……..we farm, so there’s one check. It’s OUR money………he gets what he wants, when he wants it……..I get what I want, when I want it………we talk about the big things (new trucks, boats….); but if he wants a new truck or new boat, I say go get it. I have no diamonds…..don’t ever want one……..my clothes buying takes place wherever they sell blue jeans and flannel shirts…….dress up is new jeans and a clean turtleneck and sweatshirt or blue denim shirt. In the last 2 years, for all the gift occassions, I bought him a new table saw, sliding compound miter saw, router table and router, bandsaw, beltsander, lowrance gps; and he bought me a new hunting bow, arrows, 10 ft platform hunting stand, a 15 ft platform hunting tripod, new fishing rain gear, 2 new rods and reels. Other than that, we buy anything we want, and wouldn’t even think about having to ask for “permission”, or expect the other to ask permission. If your question was all in jest, just a Wed. night rambling…….then, yes “You are a man, and you can change, if you have to.” If it was a serious question……then you need to get yourself a bigger set and man up.

easy there 2jranch… only meant for fun… My wife and I have been married for nearly 25 years (this August) and we share everything. She’s blessed me with four beautiful children and I would do anything I needed to make her happy. I was just sitting here thinking about how I could stir up a pot, blow on the embers, so to speak…

Sounds like you have a fantastic relationship and an enviable lifestyle! Congrats

You are definitely violating one of the man laws…

I’ll keep pretending not to notice the new shoes and other items from Macy’s, and hopefully she’ll continue to pretend to not notice the boxes from Cabela’s and receipts from Gander Mountain.

That’s why I asked if you were serious or just joking around. Everything I said was in good fun. But I am confused sometimes by how many guys refer to having to sneak new stuff into the house, or worry about getting the wife’s ok to get things, and they sure sound serious. I would never think of questioning Jim’s getting something he wanted, nor would he ever give me any grief about anything I bought. Maybe it’s because we are older, realize that the days ahead are less than the days behind us, and make the most out of the time we have together.

No offense intended…..and non taken. It’s all good.
