Which line for rig

Hey guys, I’m just wondering what line you use for all of your rigs, lindy’s, spinner, floating jigs….. I tied up a bunch on 12 Lb. Trilene XT and dont think it was a great idea. I usually fish very clear water and am wondering if I’ll be better off with a flourocarbon in a lighter test, possibly 8 lb. I do get into the pike often while chasing eyes and want a line that I can land them with also. Also what are your favorite colors to use for blades, floats, beads, and jigs in very clear water?

    Thanks in advance

    Chuck

I stick to Trilene XL green 6lb. If a Pike takes it I let em’ have it. I don’t like heavy line. Chartruese is by far my best color with both floaters and beads and silver with my spinners. Small Red Gammi hooks on every combo I use. Also I have found the smaller the spinner, the better. I also don’t like the hammered spinners, just smooth silver. I typically fish Winni, Leech and local lakes near Longville. My lake near Longville is VERY clear and I have great luck with these combo’s. Just one man’s opinion…RR

For lake fishing, I dont see needing to go above 6lb. You will lose some northerns, but I still catch more of those than I care to. I have caught catfish that are well over 20lbs and 50″ sturgeon jigging the river w/ 6lb Trilene XT on a light action rod.

One thing that you might want to try is 6lb fireline (2lb diameter). It is very sensative, cuts right through the water and it no stretch. If you are rigging deep water or waves and get a long way from the bait, you can still set the hook hard enough to break the line on a mono leader. It is also hard to cut, so good in rocks and will land pike easily.

Definately use floro for ALL leaders! I have found it an absolute necessity for clear water. I understand your issues with the pike but would not go any heavier than 8lb…I like 6lb myself (even 4 sometimes if they’re finicky). Main line preferences can vary. I prefer Power Pro 10/2, as I can keep things more verticle with the thinner diameter. You have to be a little more careful on the hookset, obviously, but I like the sensitivity it provides me. If you are using mono, then make sure you have a GOOD quality rod. Feel is everything to me when walleye fishing and I’ll spend a few more bucks to get it. I like medium or medium-light rods both must have a fast tip.

    Good question and good info.

Lindy rigs, I use 6lb XL or Seagur 6lb flourocarbon.

Spinner rigs I tend to go up to 12lb, sometimes heavier if I want a “stiffer” line for working rocks.

But Flourocarbon line is just a confidence thing in my opinion.
    OR
It is the weight of the line that works well for lindy rigs.

Reason is for Flourcarbon is that it is “invisible”…….Well, why do you need an invisible line when a walleye swims into gill nets by the millions?

Just this last weekend my tournament partner and I were running 6 lb Fireline and running 6 lb Vanish leaders. I had heard a lot of good things about P Line and bought a roll. We tried it while prefishing, 6 and 8 lb, and we were having a lot of problems with it breaking on simple weed snags. We switched back to 6 lb Vanish and never had another problem. Caught 3 fish during the tournament over 6 1/2 lbs with no problems.

I’m with you on P-line… it might be the cat’s meow in some of the heavier tests but the 6 – 8 pound stuff is VERY weak in my experience. I’ve never lost so many fish as when I tried that stuff on mille lacs smallies.

Oh great! I just put 6 on one of my jig rods because,”everybody at IDA was using it” according to sales guy. I’ll ride it out. I do think it is stiffer than what I’m used to.

I agree I don’t use p-line anymore either, I use vanish, for my leader.

I’m a real fan of fireline… I think I put the 20lb stuff on last year (4 or 6 lbs diameter???) and then I use 6 or 8lb Vanish, tied with a double uniknot for jigging.

I’m going out to pick up some of the new crystal fireline for respooling this year.

The new suffix line is simply awesome…I used the high vis yellow this past weekend on Rainy and landed multiple sturgeon, without breaking off…Make sure on any line you check for nicks in the line after catching a few fish or even after a snag… those little nicks will greatly decrease your lines strength no matter what lb test your using!!
I think I will be switching to the 6lb suffix on some of my reels to give it a shot!!!

8lb Fireline Smoke with a 8lb SEAGUR Flurocarbon Leader for rigging. I use 20 lb stealth with a a 8-12 lbs SEAGUR FLurocarbon or Trilene XT for spinners

Clear Water Spinners on Mille Lacs I like to start with a Perch, Firetiger pattern or even a Crawdad colors to mimic the forage. Which 3 of those colors I start with all depends if I’m on rocks/gravel or flats. I start with those 3 and let the fish dictate what I do from there.

I dont think you have to use flurocarbon or mono all of the time. Fireling has always produced for me. You can buy 6 lb. test 2 lb. diameter and its tougher than snot. I have landed up to 20 lb. pike with this was not a thing wrong with the line. Its tought and yet its invisable. Try the new Fireline Crystal. To me its the same color as mono underwater if not clearer

I either use 8Lb fluorocarbon or 8Lb Trilene (depending on what happens to be in my boat when I retie) for my leaders. I like the fluoro for leaders because it has no memory and does not twist up quite as easily as regular mono. I used to use 6Lb for leaders but had just too-many break-offs to suit me. For my main line I switched from 12Lb Fusion (no longer available) to 20 Lb Spiderwire Stealth. I use the Stealth for my main 3-way line as well as my crankbait casting rig. You won’t lose many cranks if you are using 20 Lb Stealth. In a lake you might not like using Spiderwire tied directly to anything but in the murkiness of the Mississippi it makes not difference. When the bite is on you could be using bailing twine and the fish wouldn’t care.

I like to run 6 lb fireline or power pro for my main line and I love 6 lb vanish for the leader. I have had days when the floro will outfish any other line in the boat. I read that the Bass Pro floro is some great line also.
