My son had been out ‘in the field’ for the last month or so (I presume he was participating in Operation Achilles, don’t know for sure – waiting to hear more details from him soon). He just returned to his base in Kandahar and sent a few pictures from his ‘camping trip’. Thought you guys out there might enjoy these too.

March 29, 2007 at 10:14 pm #554901Great Pics. Its great to know that there are very brave folks out there keeping us safe. My prayers are with him and all service men and women.
March 30, 2007 at 1:31 am #554939Thank him for serving and I hope they are ignoring the idiots in Washington. Tell him at the last anti-war protest in Dc on March 17th there were about 7,000 but they were outnumbered by almost 30,000 Veterans countering that protest and For the Troops. It’s called a Gathering of Eagles if you want to look them up. My brother’s grandson is also in Afghanastan we’re behind you all the way.
March 30, 2007 at 1:36 am #554942We are so very proud of our service men and women in uniform. There is no way we can ever repay these brave soldiers. Present, future and veterans from the past.
A GREAT BIG THANK YOU

March 30, 2007 at 5:20 pm #555172I sent an email to my son telling him of all your support… he said it was really appreciated!
He said it was an awesome experience for him… he went nearly 3 days without sleeping, 2 days without eating, and a whole month without showering! He was called to ‘dispose’ of various IEDs, mines, and ordinance and said he got to blow up a Taliban stronghold. They captured some Taliban fighters and turned them over to the Afghan national army (I guess the Afghans didn’t treat the Taliban terribly well ). Sounds like we’re really dropping the on the bad guys .
March 30, 2007 at 5:28 pm #555176Sure is good to hear the “good guys” are winning!!!!
Tell your son THANKS!!!!!
March 30, 2007 at 5:32 pm #555177Ya know, just hinking out loud here….It HAS to be tough fighting a war like that where the good guys and bad guys look the same! Iraq as well.
April 9, 2007 at 4:52 pm #558776finally got to speak with my son by phone last weekend!
He was participating in Operation Achilles. He had a few ‘exciting’ moments… a British HumVee was hit by a mine, resulting in one death (a translator) and two injuries. He saw an Afghan National Army truck get hit by an IED – he said it (something like a Ford F150) folded up like a pop can but amazingly none of the Afghan guys were hurt. There were six guys in the back that got blown out but all landed on their feet, with guns drawn, ready to fire. Those are some tough guys!
One thing he said not to tell his mother (ha ha) was that he drove over an anti-tank land mine… he said it blew the entire front off of his vehicle but none of the guys inside were hurt at all. Gotta luv American technology (I posted a picture of the truck a while ago)! He said it was kind of like hitting a speed bump going too fast… the truck is back in the shop being rebuilt.
He went out on a mission last weekend with some British Special Ops guys – said it was like being thrown into a professional football game – they rode in on a helo, did a touch-down landing, had seconds to get off the helo, had to run 8 km with 40+ lbs of explosives strapped to his back, do the mission, then run another 6 km to the pick-up area. He summarized the experience as “not just playing Rainbow 6 but actually living it”. Not sure I want to know!
Otherwise, all is well. He said NATO/US/ISAF forces along with the ANA are doing quite well over well. He thanks all of you who offered prayers and words of thanks. He also said that wet-wipes came in very handy when out in the field. It’s really the only way these guys can clean-up out there…
