They work from time to time… but they’re rarely a go-to presentation for me. Spinners in the river would be one of my last choices. Out on Pepin where there’s less current I’ve had successes. If the sheepshead are on the bite… forget about it.
I have pulled spinners on bottom bouncers on the river for years. Caught some nice fish too. And I have even caught fish using that technique in very shallow water too. I sometimes like to go with what they say won’t work as I have proven to myself that it does on the river. Never be afraid to experiment. I can remember many years ago watching and talking to Bob Propst Sr while he was fishing in 7 feet of water fishing a jig and crawler out of his 18 ft boat using his 8hp kicker and catching fish. He won the tournament doing that. My first of 2 fish that I put on the wall came from dragging a half crawler behind the boat on a jig and plastic while using my bigger motor in 1 1/2 to 2 ft of water at 1:30 in the afternoon on a hot sunny day. As I sit here typing I can see a #3700 Plano plastic tray full of pretied spinner harnesses. Check out the B-Fish-N Tackle website as they also carry pretied crawler harnesses. Greg Vandemark, a good friend on staff here that I’ve known for many years, told me once years ago that he has caught more bigger fish pulling crawlers on these than ever before. That changed my fishing life. I tried them and was hooked on the results. This was back before the days of casting B-Fish-N Plastics became popular which has now put these other methods out of the limelight so to speak. BUT they still do work and always will. And thats why places like HOF and B-Fish-N Tackle carry them. They know they still work wonders.
Thanks, Bill
I pull spinner a good bit on Pepin. It seems to work really well when an area has been hit real hard by guys pulling cranks.
If the sheepies are biting (when aren’t they??) switch from a crawler to a power bait crawler. It stays on a lot better than a crawler.
I used to be able to find a #3 deep cut colorado blade that was gold and painted orange on the outside. That was always one of the better colors for me. Pulling cranks or 3-ways and floaters or a plain aberdeen with bait get a lot more boat time in place of pulling spinners in my boat when the crank bite dies off.
What Lenny said. If the crank bite slows, make a pass or two pulling spinners. Has put more fish in my boat on many days.

Hey now, some of us are experts at targeting sheepheads

Last year the bite on the Croix was really “funny”.. Not what it has been in the past. The go-to stuff would work some days and then not at all the next time. I decided to pull some spinners w/crawlers and hammered’em during the “dog days” of mid-summer. They were never a staple in my arsenal before but they are now! I go pretty heavy because I try to stay on structure so I usually like 2 1/2 to 3oz with floro snells. I agree about the sheepies too. If they become a problem, Gulp or Power worms help.

Spinners do catch alot of fish but like James said its hard to beat a 3-way and floater with bait. I love pulling that setup. It is my go to setup for catching fish.
Thanks, Bill
I love pulling spinners, we have very good luck with them, I like the bare hook way better than a floater or spinner, but to me it seems like the spinner makes all the difference on some days.
