I no there a few great computer guys or gals, on here so here is my problem with my new laptop. I can’t use the DVD/CD drive when I go to device manager & troubleshoot it, I get a code 31 on the primary ide channel & the secondary ide channel. For week I’ve been on the phone tech support with no luck, they’ve even sent out a new drive. Now they would like me to send it in to them to fix it. So if any of you great computer guy’s or gal’s have any ideas or suggestions please help me.

I would check the properties of both the primary and secondary IDE channels to see what driver it was using….then I would go into c:\windows\system32\drivers and remove the driver. (most likely viPrt.something). Then I would uninstall the channels and reboot. They should reload upon rebooting and start working again.

Read this. Does it sound like the issue you are having? Can you see the cd/dvd drive when you go into windows explorer? Are there any symbols next to the cd/dvd drive, primary or secondary IDE when you go into device manager? Here is another link. If this pc is new I would take it back to where it was purchased and get a new one. Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information. Then click on components, problem devices. What info does it give you?

I’m not a PC guy, however, I’m known to use a PC from time to time. It could be as simple as have NetMeeting open. Microsoft NetMeeting conflicts with DVD/CD players. If you shut this off, it may work. It worked for me once – learned it from an IT guy.

It wouldn’t necessarily be limited to NetMeeting. There may be another program that is conflicting with the drive. Try shutting down programs one by one until the drive works. There may be an update for that software. Of course, it could be something altogether different. Troubleshooting can take time.
