I’ve caught a few fish using blade baits, but I’m not as proficient as I would like to be. Can anyone offer any pointers on the proper way to fish these? Thanks a lot!!!

I would guess there are as many ways to fish blade baits as there is to fish a jig.Hopefully some others will jump in tell us how they fish blade baits. How I fish them is floating down stream vertical jigging them. The key to this presnetation is to never drop your rod tip any faster than your blade will fall. This will enable you to feel the strike, it happens alot on the drop, suspose it’s easyer to suck in at that time.Usually every time I drop my blade I touch bottom making sure to maintain bottom contact, keeping it in the fish zone.As far as moving the blade I have the best luck just touching bottom then holding about two inches off bottom, other wise you can lift at diffrent speeds depending on the mood of the fish.Good luck
GlassmanFebruary 26, 2007 at 3:33 am #541511Most guys work WAY too hard at it…
You need a pretty stiff fast taper rod…I prefer an Avid 6’2″ MXF baitcasting outfit. I use 15# Power Pro line with a 6′ 20# Floro leader.
Lower the blade to the bottom(as recommended) and then lift it up about 6 to 8 inches…with enough force to vibrate the blade…then slowly lower it back to the bottom W/O allowing slack in the line. 99% of the time the blade is sucked off the bottom as it comes back to rest. I then leave it on the bottom for a couple seconds, maintaining a taut line…ANY….ANY…felt xtra weight or resistance upon lifting the blade again should trigger an immediate hookset response from you. Keep your hooks needle sharp and don’t be afraid to change colors frequently.
I honestly could catch bizarre amounts of Sauger/Walleye just blading all the time… But I am HOPELESSLY in love with pitching finnese jigs/plastics on light tackle… The Blades have saved many a slow day into a Sauger Fry day!Dean carries a great asst of Blades and Zincos at the baitshop. I am anxious to try BFNTackle’s new B-3s also!
February 26, 2007 at 4:00 am #541522Pitching blades works too. I’m not real profecient at it yet; but I’m getting there. If you get the chance pick Dean’s brain on fishing bladebaits. He is the bladebait master. Also do a search on blaidbaits and you can get all sorts of info. There was a good discussion in the Mississippi walleye forum about a month ago with lots of folks, including Dean, that gave out info. Good luck!

Go to the Miss River Walleye Forum and you will find the bladebait discussion bumped to the top. Lots of good info!
February 26, 2007 at 4:07 am #541531The oldtimers used to troll these bladebaits. Casting them on sandflats will work also. Hooked On Fishing in Rochester, Mn carries bladebaits. If you are along the river in pool 4 area check out Everts Resort as they carry them. B-Fish-N Tackle has some really sweet looking ones in some great colors, new colors in fact that look super. They can be ordered directly from B-Fish-N Tackle here on this site. Everts also carries them. Difting down stream or working over an area jigging them in the way they were descibed above will put fish in your boat. These are great baits that can be used all year but reaaly shine in the springtime.
