I have a Dell 1505 Inspirion and am very happy with it.

The nice thing about these lap tops is that they are basically custom made for you, so you can put together just the computer you want.

Dell here too. In 3.5 years, I’ve only had to replace a $25.00 power supply.

I have a Dell XPS HT This thing is Fast and great for gaming and everything else. It may be a little to much unless you have the cash. Good luck let us know how you do. I also have a Compaq and it’s 3 years old and I have never had trouble with it. My two cents.

Dell or sony VAIO for sure. I think Dell makes a great computer. Sony seems to be little more expensive and higher class.

I have a Sony Vaio also. I travel at least three days a week and haul it everywhere with me. That said, I never check it into baggage claim at an airline.

I have had zero problems with it (knock on wood! )

They are a little spendy but if you are using it for business they are great! Just for kids? Maybe something less exspensive.

Are you saying your Tuffy did not come with one built in?

My last 2 personal laptops have been dells…have been satisfied, but their customer service stinks if you need to call them. I like the fact that I was able to custom build them to what I wanted.

They are all pretty much the same these days.

I’d probably get an HP just to get the AMD Turion processor.

One big thing to look for, is with vista (windows O.S) it takes 512mb to run. And some of the new laptops are only comming with 512mb of memory, so the computer doesnt move very fast.

Good point on the RAM if you have extra money you absolutely should upgrade the RAM to 1GB or better. They always include the least amount needed to run the computer “smoothly”. Sony’s and dell are the best. Don’t chince on the extended warranties either. If you don’t you’ll be paying for it in the long run. Good luck.

According to Consumer Reports you’ll have the least trouble with repairs from Sony, Lenovo, then Toshiba and Apple, HP, Dell, Conpaq, Gateway.

Best buy had a NICE Toshiba for $350 advertised last weekend. I alomst bought it as a backup to my Toshiba that I love.

I have a buddy that sells them slightly used with a warranty. He mostly has gateway and dell with a few IBM’s and macs mixed in. Very reasonable. Give Pat a call at Rox Enterprizes – 651-455-6255 – tell him Turk sent you and he will take good care of you. He is in Inver Grove Hts.

Apple, that simple, that direct. And unfortunately I don’t own one.

As for the rest, regardless of company, aren’t they all Intel processors???

There’s a whole lot of pc’s out there with AMD processors.

Our main server here powering the site is an AMD Opteron Dual Core machine. Add in 8 GB Ram and you’ve got yourself a stump puller.

They’re pricey but I love the Panasonic ToughBooks. Doc’s had his under the council in his boat for the last three years tournament fishing and he still uses it for his classes during the winter.

I’ve got two older 300 mhz ones that are still going great and run map soft ware no problem. And my 1 ghz M34 is going to be around a long time after all the ones listed above are dead and gone. Its about the size of an average hard cover book. What I like best is the screens can be viewed out doors.

A couple of my customers got CF-18’s and I don’t think they’d trade them for any thing now. Panasonic’s are a great solid, no cpu brain burp systems.

James is right. Apple is putting Intel into their systems. Mac’s are a little pricey, but well worth it. I have a G5 desktop at home and a MacBook and I can’t remember the last time either one of them crashed or locked up on me. And who wants to have a couple of gigs of memory just to run a operating system (vista)!

This isn’t a knock at apple G5’s, they’re great machines, but I see them lock up frequently when pushed hard. Work gets lost. Software freezes and we get to stare at the spinning beachball o’ death.

People are always saying “mac’s are great… but they’re pricey.”

My response is spend that same money on a pc and you’re likely to have a machine that is as reliable as a mac.

But now try and find a $600 mac with all the features you can find available commonly at that price point in a pc. You can’t. And most consumers are running these el-cheapo pc machines and wonder why they have issues but the guys running macs that are 3X more expensive are having fewer problems.

Point in case… I just helped my mom pick out a new pc. She got a pentium 4, 512 mb RAM, 160 GB HD, wireless networking, cd/dvd/lightscribe, 19″ widescreen LCD flatpanel, MS Office needed work her job and XP Professional and a years subscription to Norton for $635… DELIVERED.

Again… not a knock against apples. They a darn fine product…. but comparing a G5 to the pcs used by the average consumer is like comparing a chevette (pc) and a corvette (mac) and chiding the pc for being slower and less reliable.
