I am thinking about fishing the mississippi river in the pool 2 section from shore. I have found the public access area in South Saint Paul by the 494 bridge. I am wondering if anyone has had any luck down there from shore or any other spots to hit from shore…please help…Mr. No Boat

I havent fished that area of the river much, but I also havent seen hardly any shore fisherman there. You could probably get some action just above the 494 launch about a 1/2-1 mile upriver. There is a long rip rap shoreline just below the railroad tracks. The channel runs close to this shore so you have good access to deeper water. Most guy who fish the area you referred to are fishing wingdams. These would be hard to fish from shore.

Otherwise, the upper part of the river is decent for shore fishing. Areas to try are Hidden Falls, Pike Island (both ends, but also good fishing along the entire shore), under the Highway 5 bridge or from the Dam to where the Minnehaha dumps in.

Over the last few years I have seen just about every specie of fish get caught right at the pier by the access. As the water warms , the rough fish seem to take over. The rip rap shoreline offers some good possibilities for smallies. Go south about 1/4 mile and you will see the storm water pipe. This spot works good also. North of the ramp is another stretch of rip rap that has produced a few fish.

I have a nephew that fishes out of a city park i believe. It is just up stream and on the east side of the bank from Lilydale boat landing…

Sorry ’bout interrupting, but I have to ask:

Is “Wade” really your name, or is it just used in conjunction with “Mr No Boat?”

Struck me as kind of funny is all. Good luck.

Sure! Here are a few spots to get you started. All of these areas are good spots to get the pole bending from shore. A simple bottom rig “hook and sinker” with a crawler will get bit. Expect to catch mostly rough fish such as carp, sheepshead, suckers, redhorse, and an occasional walleye or catfish. Bring along enough tackle to re-tie as you will get snagged a few times on each trip.

    1. Right under the High Bridge on the west side of the river.

    2. Just down the same road (up stream) about 1.5 miles to the Lillydale Boat access. You can park there and fish just downstream from the ramp. (This is a good spot, I try this area first)

    3. Hidden Falls park. There is at least 2 miles of fishable shoreline here and you won’t be alone.

    4. Minnehaha park. Walk down to the river following the creek and fish from there up to the dam. (Casting cranks for walleye here is better than fishing off the bottom….too many snags)

    5. The downstream side of Raspberry (Navy) island under the Wabasha bridge.

I have fished all of these spots and done well. Let me know if you need more detailed directions to get to these areas. Don’t be afraid to do a little exploring!

    Good Luck.
