Electric Knife – Favorite Brands

Lots of guys prefer using electic knives for cleaning fish (Favorite Fish to Eat post this am). I can keep up with the best of them with a 5″ or 8″ rapala but I’d like some advice on which are the better electric knives brands. I’ve seen them run from $19 to $79 – 110V or cordless. Anybody have a recommendation – my birthday’s coming up & I might add a knife to my “want” list.

    Thanks
    Pete

I have had the best luck with my Mister Twister. I have used a few others like the American Angler from Walmart, but I always go back to my Mister Twister. The one thing I make sure though is to get a set of blades that come to a point. Some knive offer the rounded tip and I didn’t care for that.

I have a Mr Twister cord model that my buddy Mr. Eyejacker gave me a couple of years ago. I really like it. My next one will be cordless however. The way I catch fish this knife will last a long time!

Mister Twister are pretty good. Probably the fastest blade rotation in any of the knives. American Angler and Rapala work well for cordless options. My only knock on them are the blade ejection button is right where I like to place my thumb. The $9.99 Black and Decker at Fleet Farm gets the job done too.

    Silly question,
    But,
What is the difference between a eletric fish fillet knife and your typical electric carving knife for meats?????

That is the same problem I have, the engineer didn’t think that one though.

I have never owned one before but after lastnights posts on here about using them for Perch I think I am on the market for one…

My favorite is a black and decker electric kitchen knife–works great and cheap. I had all kinds of trouble with Rapala and a guide I talked to got me to using the kitchen knife–works on panfish, eyes, cat–everything! I do have a storm I got for Xmas but the BandD works GREAT!

I have to agree with those who like the Mister Twister knife. I’ve got 2 of them. I do wish they were cordless. They can take care of a limit of fish in short order.

I can only speak for my American Angler. I got it as a gift about 10 years ago. It sat for a year because “I ain’t using that damn thing” Gave it a try and I would never go back. As I said I can’t compare as I have never had a reason to purchase another knife. Blades are even still sharp, cut up a 17” eye and a respectable crappie last night.

Gary, there is no difference between them and a meat knife other than the blades on a fish knife are more flexible. My blades actually fit in my meat knife and work.

I have one made by Storm that is just great. Its going on 6 years now and it works just like the day it came out of the box. Fast and sharp. I actually bought a set of the staight rounded end blades for it. Under some circumstances they come in handy.

Am I the only one that likes the Rapala? Love mine, the tool box is too small though. It has a long enough cord that I can plug it into my power outlet in the truck and filet fish on my tailgate That’s a plus for me during the walleye spawn. Sherm

i would suggest not to get the cordless rapala. i have one that is just over 1 year old even though the charger discharges the batts before it recharges i have a hard time getting a couple months out of them.

Procter and Gamble, Hamilton Beach, they both sell electric carving knives for about $9.95 that most every household uses for their Thanksgiving turkeys. They work great. I used the same one from opener 2000 until this last July when I had to switch to my replacement knife. Blades just got too dull to cleanly filet any more fish. Not to brag, but as a guide, I clean a lot of fish, and these are the only knives I use.

Glenn, I just got done with some perch …seems like it takes longer to drag the cords out and put em away…

I also have the Rapala 110V/12V combo, knife works well and I like having the power options but the darn case is just too small.

I have used the typical carving knife for years. They generally come on sale around Christmas time for about $4-$6 and I’ll pick up one here and there for a spare. I now have three as the original one is still kicking. The only difference is in the blades flexibility and the tip. Either the GE or the B & D.

I have been using a Blakemore knife now for about 3 years and it is still running strong. Before that, I would burn up a couple a year!

You haven’t burned up a mister twister I would bet. Mine has been going strong for 10+ years and it is used often

It comes with 2 sets of blades. It works sweet on pan fish
You might mess up a few until you get the hang of it. The biggest thing to remember, let the knife do the work (you do not have to force anything), and using a cutting board so you can get the handle down level with the cut is a big help!
Once you get the hang of an electric filet knife you will wonder how they fileted fish in the old days

I have been using a 12 volt Blakemore knifes for over 10 years.
Love the 12 volt do not need electricity

been rated most powerful and has two speeds
As noted before let the knife do the work
