When cleaning pike it’s always a mess and slime get’s in the way of everything. I take a 5 gallon bucket, fill a little over 1/3 full of water and then add about a 1/3 gallon maybe more if needed of vinager. Place pike in the bucket and stir them around in it. The slime falls off so you can fillet them easier and it doesn’t do anything to the taste of your fish.

Another trick is to keep them in a gunny sack. When I keep a pike, I put it in a gunny sack to haul home. The burlap removes the pike slime – makes cleaning way less messy.

when catching a pike you will be keeping, kill it right away. Throw it on the ice for a little while to stiffen up, then put it in your bucket. That has worked well for me. Killing the fish seems to stop the slime.
Another thing, you could wrap it in newspaper, I have heard that works also.

What we use in fish taxidermy is borax or Alum. sulfate but not sure if that would penetrate the meat if left in too long.both products work great,on product is even called slime off,I soak in laundry tub of Slime off for a couple minutes then rinse off before skinning.I would try the other suggestions first though.I just threw that out if your not satisfied with the reults of the other methods.KD

I all ways fillet on newspaper, seem’s the slime sticks to the newspaper and gives it some grip untill the fillets are off the skin then it’s on to another piece of news paper. Seems to work for me

Try to fillet the fish partially frozen.. cold on the hands, but the slime doesnt get out of control. Freezing and thawing pike is by far the worst. Letting them get to that *frosty* level and not rock hard seems to be the key.

Darn things taste good.. I’ll deal with it either way at least once a winter to have some for a fish fry.

I used to use the newspaper too… but I always got the classifieds stuck between my teeth.

Best way I’ve found is to cut the line
