What are you fishing for? Meaning, what are you gonna be pulling or dragging?

February 5, 2007 at 8:49 pm #533050I think most of the guys here are sold on the Croix Wild River rods. Never picked one up but I am sure they are nice. Trolling rods don’t have to be really sensitive as they will most likely spend most of their time in the holders, but they do need to have a good taper. For walleyes I run the Loomis Walleye Series cranking rod in 7’6 for my inside lines and then the Bass Pro Walleye Angler with Diawa SeaLine combos. Those are 8’6″, the trick is to run baits/rods according to how much line you need to have out. For example if I am pulling cranks and three ways, I run the cranks on the back rod or short one, and the heavy three way almost vertical up front. If you are running cranks on all of them, you need to stagger it so the front rod handles the deeper diver, and the back pulls the one you need to long line. Up on the St. Louis river we run down deep husky jerks in the front holder with as little as 12 feet of line out in 7-9 feet of water, and then hot-n-tots or shad raps out the back longlined. Our goal is to just have the baits nick the bottom from time to time instead of dig the stones. Then just let the current do most of the work as we “S” turn up the channel.
February 5, 2007 at 8:50 pm #533051Hi
Do alot of trolling for walleyes on pepin and really like my 8 1/2 ugly stick trolling rods with line counters for long lining or planner boarding…and use a stiffer 7 1/2 foot for threeway or bottom bouncers…seems to work good for me…Fiberglass seems to be much more dureable and last longer whatever you choose…good luckFebruary 5, 2007 at 8:50 pm #533052stcroixfisherman,
7’6″ inside rods and 10’6″ outside rods are very polular with many of our fisherman here on IDA.
February 5, 2007 at 9:07 pm #533063thanks for all the input i will probly end up buying some more croixs with sealine 27s on them ill probly go 7 inside and maybey 8’6 outside
February 5, 2007 at 9:16 pm #533071I would seriously take a look at Cabelas trolling series rods….very cheap( price wise)and good quality…I know that is what some pro’s use on the FLW!!! You don’t need to spend a bunch of money on sensitivity rods cause more times that not they are going to be sitting in the rod holders anyway!!!!
I am also presuming that your trolling boards!!!!! If not then never mind my above mention post!!!!
February 5, 2007 at 10:03 pm #533086Depending on your situation….you might be happier with the 17lc vs the 27lc.Good luck & have fun!

If you’re going to hand-hold these rods at all, consider 17s. The 27 is a bulkier, heavier reel that will tire your forearm after holding for a while. The 17s will still work fine for pulling boards.
jeff6771Posts: 87February 6, 2007 at 6:29 am #533317you would be better off going with the 17s unless your going to pull lead then the 27s are better.
