Was there nine years ago on our honeymoon at that exact date. Hot! Had a great time! I recommend renting (or listen to a time share pitch like I did for a free jeep for the day) a vehicle for the day and traveling around the island. Pretty cool to see the calm side of the island vs. the body surfing side. Snorkeling is a must, cocktails are watered down, so prepare to drink about a thousand, if you are into that. I believe the cruise ships come in on Wednesdays, and the vendors jack up their prices that day, so don’t shop that day. And if you shop, barter! They always come down. Have fun! It’s hard not to in Cozemel.

I have been to Playa del Carmen twice, which is on the mainland directly across from Cozumel. Great area and fun to travel down that way. Went to the island one day for a few hours and looked around. I would go again, make sure to charter a boat to do some fishing in the area. Well worth the money and good catches to be had. Have a good trip!!

Heading for Playa Del Carmen in about a week. We have a day of offshore fishing booked, & 2 days of diving. Hope to also get in a round of golf or 2, a night dive, day of flyfishing, see the ruins, as well as the requisite eating, drinking and dancing.

Cozumel once, Puerto Vallarta twice and Cancun more than I care or can remember.
There is a good charter service in Cancun. Caught the biigest ‘cudas I ever have with them. They are shared charters but not like you would think. I’ll get you the info.

I love Riviera Maya!!! Two years ago my Wife and I went to the Iberostar Lindo, which is south of Playa de Carmen. The ferry to Cozumel docks at Playa de Carmen. I did fish there, caught a 12 foot White Marlin which they commonly call Sailfish, a 45 pound male Mahi Mahi (Dolphin), and some Bonita which is some sort of Mackerel. If I were to go fishing there again I would not book our trip through Fun Jet, although it worked out fine. I would take a trip into Playa del Carmen and walk the docks and negotiate a price for a full day. If you or your Wife are at all prone to motion sickness, make sure to buy Dramamine here and take with you. It might make you drowzy, but is better than vomiting. All but the crew of the boat, myself and two others were sick when we were out. I will say this though, reeling in those fish on light tackle (30lb test) will make your forearms sore. Make sure to carry waterproof sunblock with you and re-apply often the entire time you are there. Sun poisoning is more common there than Montezuma’s revenge. PM me if you have any questions. Gosh, I wish I were going back! So much to do. Also be careful, things change down there after dark and entrapement is legal. NO…. I did not get into trouble, but someone could very easily without even doing anything wrong.

P.S. Their day life is like our nightlife. Free Tequila shots at a lot of clothing stores. LOL. Easiest way to avoid a hangover is to just stay drunk. LOL.

P.S. I almost forgot, make sure you go snorkeling at the coral reef, the second largest in the world next to the Australia Great Barrier Reef. The coral reef down there extends all the way to Venezeuala. Really Cool. Xel Ha is a really neat day trip also if you like to swim/snorkle.

P.S.S. Montezuma’s Revenge is real. Do not drink the water. Insist on bottled water and do not accept it unless you break the seal. They will refill water bottles with tap water. I got it, layed me up for a full 36 hours. Fever, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Try to get a Cenote dive in if you can, they are great. Do it on your last dive day & your equip is fresh water rinsed.

we went down to Playa del Carmen last year in March (see avatar – pic of a 7.5′ sailfish we caught there!). Awesome time… I also highly recommend the ruins at Tulum and the natural ‘waterpark’ Xel-Ha.

I will be on the return flight, that you arrive on. Heading on the 16-23. Where are you staying ? If you dive, you have to hit Palancar Reef, and cave dive. Also if you snorkel, hit Chaakanaab Park, it is beautiful reef. Actually I think ships come in on Tuesday and Thursday now, moreso, so stay out of town then. I would skip the time share BS, and rent a Jeep to hit the other side of Island. If you do go to the other side, you have to end up at Coconuts. It is a blast !!! Also, if you eat in town, get off the main drag, the good places to eat are a couple blocks back. Have fun !!! Oh yeah, DO NOT drink the water.

Just got back from Cozumel.. Wishin I was back there…Went fly fishing for bonefish on the flats on the north end lagoons. Guide was Alex Evan 85-700-43 in # on island. [email protected] He had me on fish ALLLLL day long. caught many and had a great day.. you can spin fish jigs or fly fish. he has all the stuff + lunch and drinks on his flats boat. $300 full day. boat to myself…
Watched the deep sea boats come in to dock every night and very slow. 2-3 fish a day for 6 people biggest about 30lbs makes for a long diesel fume suckin day. I passed. season really does not get goin deep sea for a few months. Im going back 1st week in March and cant wait. PM me if you need more info. Greg

Was in Cozumel last spring, but didn’t get the chance to go fishing. We stayed at the El Cozumeleno. The island is AWESOME. PM me if you have any questions.

    BradGuck,
PM me for info also. I have been down there three times in the last two years. Two times I stayed at an economy motel (very clean, air, Cable, coffee for $40. per night. the third time I stayed at the Cozumelena for $275/night. The food is definately much better if you do not do the all inclusive and eat out at the great restaurants in town. Cozumel is very safe compared to Playa del Carmen. Much cleaner too. I would be going there again next week but the wife is sick of Mexico so were checking out the Keys in Florida instead. I have not done the fishing deal there yet but have written down the info here as I plan on going to Coz in April hopefully. Maybe you can clue me in by then.

    Hey Greg,
Got any pictures from your fishing excursion? That sounds more fun than deep sea fishing anyhow. How big of fish, and how many did you catch on that trip?

    Big G,
We are staying at the El Cozumeleno. Come in on the 23 on Sun Country. Dang, would be a blast to be there at the same time and share a charter out fishing or something, or maybe catch a few cold ones!!

    King:
Is the Xel-Ha tour everything it is made out to be? We are definately going there, but just curious, I am not a diver, wish I had the time to get certified So just snorkeling for us, but Xel-Ha is supposed to only be 8 feet or so deep, so you should easily be able to dive down.
If any one else will be down there during that time, let me know, maybe we could wet a line together!!

Any one heading for Ixtapa/Zih. around the 15th of Feb. We will be down for a few days then. Would be interested in getting together for some cervasa or maybe a fishing trip. Send me a PM.

    Cant wait for warm weather.

Here is a link to the small fishing village we like to hang out at. On a day like this it is hard not to day dream about this. Talked to our host at the B&B and she is booking me a fishing trip on a super panga out of Barra. The super Panga is not as nice of boat as the big one we take out of Zihua. but is still alot of fun and catches plenty of fish. 1 week and counting.

Went to Playa del Carmen in 2005. While there, was on the island. Not too bad, they were cleaning up after the hurricanes. After we got back to the states, Cozumel was hit even harder then the mainland with a hurricane. Other than that, it was a good time. Hot and a lot of European People. And they are not scared to bare it all. Have a good trip.

Hey, also, if any of you are heading to the Cozumel/Playa Del Carmen area from the 23rd of feb thru Mar 2 I’ll be there. If you know anyone going who would maybe like to share a fishing charter also that would be fun! I think Big G is going to Cozumel the week before me, and thats a bummer, it’d be fun to meet someone from IDA for some fishin and some cold ones!!
