Open water, where to go?

I know, the Mississippi. But, if you wanted to head out of the cold/ice for 4+ days, where would you go right now? Talking pulling the boat, keeping the drive as short as possible but finding a little warmer weather and good fishing.

Species doesn’t matter much…smallies, largemouth, eyes, muskies, etc…

I can go there anytime. We didn’t plan a vacation this winter so it’s more of a get away/fishing trip. The wife and I were watching anglers edge tonight, they were on Dale Hollow, it got us talking. We want to get out of here for a few days. Dale Hollow may be a tad far though. I know there are many places to hit, just looking for opinions. Ohh…not the miss.

There must be something in southern Illinois or Missouri that is warmer than here and has open water. Not sure how far you are looking to travel though.

Dale Hollow is an amazing fishery!! I love the streams/rivers/lakes in TN…

It is about nine hours for me, and I am about four hours south of you, so that is quite a drive, but in my opinion….well worth it!

BIRDDOG, a sugguestion not too far from home would be below Big Bend Dam near Fort Thompson, SD (Missiouri River). From Buffalo, MN it is about a 6.5 hr drive. I recently moved to MN from Aberdeen, SD and used to fish there a lot. Walleye action starts picking up the 2nd or 3rd weekend in Feb. By Mar 1 it is usually very good. Most of the time you’ll get a 50 degree weekend by then. Good luck!

Just shoot down 35 to Missouri. I have fished both Truman and Mark Twain lakes, Big and fun to fish.

Wolf creek power plant in Ks near Coffeyville. It’s a lake on the warm water discharge of a power plant and last time I heard it was awesome.I haven’t ever fished but have friends that have. It’s been on several fishing shows over the years and the water stays warm enough in the winter to keep the fish agressive. There used to be a website about it .You might do some scrouging and see what you come up with.It is a couple hours southwest of Kansas City.

Few years ago I took a trip down to Bull Shoals in Mo.
Went the end of Feb. or early in March I don’t remember when exactly. The fishing was slow and the weather was warm compared to Minnesota but was still only on the low 50’s

Caught a few Silver Bass so it wasn’t a total waste of time. I’m not sure where you want to go. It won’t be real warm anywhere you head to unless you head way down South.

Let us know what you decide and keep us posted.

I’ve always wanted to do the White River thing in Arkansas. I know February is the killer time for the big trout to come on too. I believe Gaston’s is the popular resort there out of hundreds.

The White is a great trip
I have gone three times and plan on going many more times, it is a good winter get-away. The last time I went down with my father and brother, it snowed and was very cold. Still had a great time catching browns.
I know James has made the trip before also.
If you go make time to take the tour of the Ranger plant, very cool.

I might skip the Ranger tour but I’d love to hear more about your trips, can you share where you’ve stayed, how you fished, what you’ld do the next time? I’m REALLY interested.

I spent a week at Beaver lake in Arkansas early last spring. The place we stayed was awesome, fishing was decent, caught a variety every day, weather was a bit cool for that time of year. I didn’t fish the White. My closest friend has since moved down there and fishes the White regularly. If you want more info on where we stayed let me know.

Dropped in to pick up my boat today, at a Ranger dealer, they mentioned there are some crazy fisherman out there (myself included, they know I’ll be on the river asap) she said they just had a guy drop off a Ranger, said he was going on a fishing trip after he got the boat back, I told them to take thier time.

Lucky for me, it’s not my boat.

Keep the options coming guys, still haven’t made up our mind on where to go?? All the places you guys mention seem well with in the distance we want to drive. But I have had more than one guy tell me “if your going to drive that far, keep driving till you hit Dale Hollow”. But…if we can find something a little closer with good fishing we could be swayed?

Really? It’s was an 1850 Reata, sounded just like
you. Either way I found it funny.

Crystal Pirez has a 1860 angler on the floor there, first time I’ve seen one looks nice, but I’ll still take mine anyday.

I wonder if NYC Tim is still open water fishing Oneida? That looked like fun!
