I have a real nice carpet bedliner in the back of my truck and my auger leaked an entire tank of gas on it. What’s the best way to get rid of the smell?? Will activated charcol work?

    Speaking as the staff chemist…..

charcoal will work to absorb materials that are volatile (evaporate readily) like the gasoline. It will work less well, in this application (soaked into carpet) for heavy liquids like the oil that was likely mixed in with the gas.

It might work if you dump the charcoal on the stain, rib it in real well, and then vacuum it off and replace it, say once a week or so. Once the smell is gone, you should be able to shampoo the charcoal out.

Having said that, a good hot sudsy shampoo with a rug doctor might be the way to start.

Wash the area well with Dawn dish soap. They use Dawn to clean up oil spills should work to break that down too. I keep a bottle in my boat and with my ice gear. gets fuel smell off the hands great. Well then you have to work with the sweet smell of spring flowers, but that has to be better then gas.

    Baking soda might work.

Gary you beat me to it again! Actually Dawn dish soap does work to remove oil/gas stains. However you may need a whole lot of it to remove the gas from a whole tank full of gas. This could cause you some suds action the next few times it rains.

After washing it with the Dawn dish soap, use distilled vinegar on it. If it eats the odor of cat pee, it should cut the gas smell! It worked in a house we moved into years ago. I read the tip on some home remedy thing and thought to myself….yea right Amazingly it worked after 3 scrub downs. After each scrub the difference was very noticeable!

I also use vinegar for breaking house dogs. Clean up the area after a accident so they don’t smell it every time they walk bye!

Doesn’t your cousin do floor coverings? Have him get you a new piece of carpet. Or like Gary said, a match will work, just don’t do this in your garage, the mrs. might be a little

I was an aircraft refueler in the service and when we got gas, or diesel or even jet fuel on our clothes we washed them with tide. Tide cleaned the mess and we added a bottle of coke and that got rid of the smell.

For this application I would use dawn and add 2 liter bottle of coke to the water.

I know your saying no way. I said the same thing when I was told. I was shocked when it actually took the smell out. I was even more shocked when it got out the diesel smell and the jet fuel which smell much worse then gas.

    just my .02 cents

MMM nothing like the smell of jet Fuel. I never worked with the JP-8 in the states but did in Somalia. We mainly dealt with JP-4 and Jet A-1.

Replaceing the carpet would be an expensive option. It’s a $350 custom BedRug. I’ve left the topper windows open for several days now and it’s getting a little better. I’m going to continue to let it air out and then get some activated charcol then after a while I’ll try the Dawn dish soap and a carpet cleaner.
Thanks for all of the ideas. I’ll let you all know how it turns out in a week or so.

    Ben,

I’ve got the Bedrug bedliner too. I thought it wasn’t supposed to absorb gas and you could power wash it. At least that was in the description I read prior to purchasing.

I just emailed them to see what they suggest I do. I’ll probably power wash it when the weather gets a little nicer.
