    And it turned out awesome!

In this episode Scott Steil and I head out in search of trophy sized panfish with a special emphasis on monster-sized bluegills.

We ended up finding the motherload of slab crappies and mega-sized bluegills relating to some deep structure in the form of sunken timber. The underwater footage we were able to obtain (we had 16′ visibility) still has me in awe over the number of adult fish that will cluster around prime habitat! We caught a monster muskie busting through this school of pannies in search of its next meal…. two times! Big walleye were spotted repeatedly cruising slowly around the edges of the timber looking to catch an off-guard bluegill. And all of it is on film.

This show will focus on teaching how to locate big panfish and how to consistently catch them once they’ve been found. The “big fish” for this shoot was a 1 Lb 3oz. bluegill caught on a purple mini mert by yours truely. 8.5″ – 9.5″ bluegills were common. Despite the massive quanitites of fish in the area the bite was very difficult and we had to really pull out some tricks to consistently catch these fish. If you’ve never used an underwater camera while ice fishing… you need to see this episode to see what a useful tool an underwater camera can be when trophy panfish are ultra-finicky.

Be sure to tune in for this episode: Charter Cable Channels 13 / 23 in the metro area or watch it here online.

I believe that fish was a little bigger. 1.3 pounds, I think that equals about 1 pound 5 ounces or so

Either way It was a dandy fish. It almost sounded like you were rubbing that in a little

It is very hard to figure size of these Bluegill because they are just about as thick as they are long

It was the biggest gill I’ve EVER caught. It made my day!

Rubbing it in? Heck no. This deal was a team effort and Scott had the location of these fish DIALED. And we busted our butts to catch them. Fishing outside all day in 15 – 20 degree temps with 15 MPH winds was no easy task.

Oh come on Scott wide as they are long haha but I know what ya mean on those big gills guys used to go to a small lake in Grand Rapids yearly and we used to get into some pig bulls…biggest I ever got was a 1 lb. 6 oz. and what a hug she was!! 1 lb. fish were not uncommon surely a true trophy cause it is almost as hard to find a lake to produce giant panfish now days as it is to find one that produces large walleye as well…..can not wait to see this video I love them big knob headed bulls

Coming Feb 10. We’ll have the show here on the site or you can catch it on Comcast Cable if you’re local.

With all the awesome underwater footage we have this is one of those episodes you’ll want to catch on TV to see all the detail. Watching it here on the web just won’t do it justice.

This airs in the metro area only.

If you don’t write a check to comcast each month for cable… I’m sorry but you can’t see this on TV unless you have a friend WITH COMCAST tape it for you.

Sorry, no. We’ll be looking to expand ASAP but we’re going to need a lot of help from sponsors to get it done.

James, here’s a thought for ya. It would be interesting to see how many of us out here in Lapland, who would really like to see the In-Depth Outdoors episodes, would be up for something like this. What about a subscription to the In-Depth Outdoors series? That way we could prepay for the series and receive each episode as it’s released in DVD form. You could even have it set up so they could be purchased by individual episodes online if so desired. That would sure give me a good reason to look forward to watching my mailbox again, in anticipation of the next episode, instead of the usual garbage. Just a thought. I’d be all over that.

I do in fact plan to make all episodes available on DVD. I’ll have copies in-hand tomorrow and I’ll make them available to those interested.

Keep your eyes peeled. I’ll have a DVD in your mail box before you know it.

I’ve heard this next episode is “The Bomb”…
I personally do not get it out here in the Annandale area..
But I foresee in the future this will not be an issue. IDA/IDO is onto something real big here and the networks believe in numbers. Everyday this site is growing, everyday someone new on the road sees a IDA logo on a vehicle, hat, card. I dont know what the true statistics are but I bet everyday thousands of people see someone with a logo the more us members show our support to the site by showing our true colors (IDA/IDO logos) the better the chances are we are going to grow to the point James and his crew are going to have broadcasters begging for there rights to show IDO on there stations..
Here is another way I show my support besides having the logos on my vehicles and the hat I wear. My portable Ice house has my personal information on a sign hanging on a leader on the door one side is my info the other is the Winter IDA fishing contest entry all laminated and looking good in any weather condition. I have had a number of people ask me about it out on the lake.. I tell them a bit about the site and how to navigate thru the site to find there area they are interested in and I hand them a IDA website card, with all the info needed to get to the site and about whats on the site..Thanks James..

Anything I can do to help this site out I am willing to give it my 100% I have learned so much on this site that I dont know where to start. My brother is the one that got me back into the outdoors after being gone out of state for a while and then one day he goes I found another site you would be interested in and I have deleted all the others from my favorites and here I sit everyday reading watching for new posts and chatting with a few.Just have to stay away from the classifieds..
After every shoot IDO does I now know to watch the clasifieds..

Isn’t the local 23 the WB channel? I have DirecTV and tried to find the 1st show while out in my ice house, but couldn’t find it. Sucked.

    PTC-
The second episode of IDO will be on Feb.10th Saturday morning I believe the time slot is either 9 or 9:30A.M. but you must have Comcast to be able to recieve the correct channel formats, St.Cloud 23 is not the same format as Comcasts 23…
