Hey everyone I’m new to IDA and glad to be here! I was wondering if anyone had info on fishing lake trout through the ice. I just moved and I live by Big Trout Lake in Cross Lake, MN. I want to try to catch some lakers but I’ve only read about it and haven’t found anyone who fishes for them. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Depth, Line, Lures, Bait, ect..

Welcome Boat Salesman- I used to fish Lakers quite a bit on many lakes off the Gunflint Trail. Up there we looked for 35-50 feet of water. We would fish with primarily large heavy hair jigs tipped with a shiner or dead cisco. Also used airplane jigs as well as heddon zonars. Again welcome to IDA and let us know how you did on the lakers. John

I’ve went up to the Nestor Falls area on Whitefish and Crow.

The most common technique is 4-5″ white powerbait tube jigs, maybe tipped with bait. Fish off points and turns off the islands varying depths down to even 100′. When I’ve went you try to set up 4 guys in like 40, 60, 80, 100 and see what happens.

The 2005??? In-Fisherman ice mag had a really good article. I think Gord Pyzer or someone like that recommended Rat L Traps also.

You need a bigger, beefier rod and maybe no-stretch with a a flouro leader.

Most bait shops up there sell 42″ or so “trout” ice rods and most just use either their summer spinning reels or bait casters depending on what you like.

I know up there it’s not uncommon to get 50″ muskie either.

Many times they will circle your bait and play with it a little. If you see that they are there and not biting (Flasher or camera) Pull it up to the hole many time they will chase and hit the lure feet from the hole. Hang on if you latch into a big one they can fight like no other
