Hey guys I need a little advise on what would be a good length rod for pulling cranks out the back of the boat, I use cabellas 9ft trolling series for outside and was wondering if anyone uses shorter poles for the inside ones. If you do what power do you suggest? I’m making my winter run to cabellas tomorrow. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I guess I was wondering if it made it easier with shorter rods going out the back. Again thanks in advance.

I use all braid when I troll cranks so I need a rod that has plenty of give. Hookset is not an issue, ripping the hook out of a fish’s mouth when bringing it in is the issue.
I never go shorter than 8 footers. One rod that I have used for a while with great success is the Cabelas Tourney Trail IM7 rod. I use the 9’6″ rod. That rod paired up with the 8′ is a darn good set of trolling rods.
Another way to go is fiberglass. They are much heavier but have the necessary give for fighting big walleye. Uglystick Bigwater rods are a good economical choice for ‘glass.

I am actually thinking of going to longer rods for next season. When I have a net man in the boat I plan to use 12′ for my long rods. I probably won’t use these when I am by myself because of netting issues with such a long rod.

    Lenny,
I might be mistaken but I thought I saw a post where you mentioned using the Daiwa Heartland trolling rods. Sorry if I’m imagining things or if it was somebody else.
Not trying to hijack the thread but does anybody have any opinions on the Heartlands?

Yeah, I use Heartlands for my leadline rods. They are very good trolling rods. Nice and soft. My only knock on them is they tend to be a bit heavy.
