Stainless Steel Prop Question

I am looking into buying this prop for my Johnson 150 Fast Strike. The seller told me it’s a “ProTested” that’s 14×25 with the #’s N299 on it. The problem is that I never heard of it, and why would it have three notches(holes) in the front of it? I cant beat the price for $75. Hopefully I can attatch a picture so you can see it.

The “notches or holes” allow some of the exhaust to escape and flow over the blades. When taking off this allows the prop to “slip” a little bit, thus increasing youre rpms for a better holeshot. At faster speeds these holes have no effect.
A 25 pitch prop may be to much unless youre running a lighter/ fast boat. 21 or 23 would be more common on that motor.
But $75 is a steal if it is the pitch you need.

A big picture of the prop in-question.

This is the first in dealing with a prop issue. My boat is a Basskota 18′ fiberglass.

Interesting I have never heard of that boat and or prop maker.

I would have to agree though 25 pitch might be a bit much.

What are you running now for a prop and what are you trying to improve hole shot or top end?

Do you know the weight of your boat?

    Hull style?

    V-Hull or Tri-Hull?

Basskota was made in Coon Valley, Wi a number of years ago, they use a Skeeter hull and build on it. I’m not sure on weight or current pitch of prop (pretty beat up). I have awsome hole shot now, even beat those ’04 250hp Tritons out of the hole, but quickly passed. Do you think that this pitch may damage anything? or am i just going to suffer hole shot?

I run a 25 (with holes) on my Yamaha 150, it works just fine, I get just over 5500 RPM at top speed. I have a 1989 18.5′ Cajun bassboat. I wouldn’t brag about my holeshot but the top end is pretty good for an old boat with an old motor.

The price is right, if it is what you need.

I highly recommend measuring the existing prop you have now. Going from a 21 to a 25 is drastic!

Even a 23 to a 25 can make huge differences.

    Never heard of it…???

I doubt that your 150 Fast Strike will turn a 14X25 prop. That is a lot of prop unless you are running a racing haul, tricked out motor, or an aluminum rig.

    I’m running a 14 1/2″ X 27 pitch (3-blade stainless) with a 250hp Yammie V-max on a 1400 lbs haul and it is everything I have to turn it ~5900rpm.

The holes are called “PVS” holes.

I’m still curious of the maker…

I would see if someone has a 24 Raker. The Rakers I have run on my smaller Bass and Walleye boats with my 150-175 Intruders ran very well with rpms at 5400. Good hole shots and great top end!

Just ask the guy if you can test run it for 10 minutes. If you like it you’ll hand him the cash.

    Try before you buy.

Are you sure the brand is “Pro-Tested” and the prop just hasn’t been on a “pro’s” boat and tested?

Is it original?, has it been reworked? What boat/motor combination is it coming off of?

Best advice, try before buy….if you can’t try it now, pass on it til you can.

You also have to make sure that the pitch change allows you to stay in your engines operating range recommended by the manufacturer.

Definately try first. It just sounds like to reasonable a price.

This is why I love this site, everyone is so helpful
It’s an ebay item from Texas. I think I’ll give it a shot and if it sucks….look for it being posted on IDA at a discount!
