Not a fishing or hunting post, but a feel good post. Went out this morning with my extended family and cut wood. Cut enough wood (Red Oak and Maple)for 3 families that where in need, that should last them through this winter and into the next. 2 of them did not know we where coming. Had 17 guys moving, cutting and splitting. Filled a 5 ton truck, 2 F350 dumps, 2 3/4 ton trucks and one trailer (all of them TWICE). Glad we had 2 hydrolic splitters. Afterwards we went to our favorite watering hole and they provided free food for the guys.

I can relate to your post. I lived in Stewartville for a couple years after college and rented a house in the country from an elderly couple that lived across the road. The wife treated us like her own kids and kept us in fresh apple pies and deserts year-round. Her husband was in his 70’s and as nice a guy as you’d ever meet… but as stubborn as a mule. He had to cut and split his own wood for the winter. He’d cut the logs in the summer and stack it for splitting in the winter. Once he started stacking his wife would give me the key to their shed and I’d come across the road after dark and split up as much as I could in 3 – 4 hours and stack it around his “starter” pile.
My guess is he knew exactly what was going on but doing it on the sneak like we did it didn’t infringe directly on his pride so he let it slide.
Man that made a guy feel good. And when we gave him notice that we were going to move… he offered to cut our rent in half to get us to stay.
I bet your crew of 17 made one heck of a difference to those 3 families. It is amazing what it does for someone’s outlook when they know people care.

January 7, 2007 at 12:40 am #519315Thoreau said that wood warms twice, once when you cut it and once when you burn it but I think this wood has done at least triple duty by warming the heart as well.Good job done right!

…and an inspiration!
I use to try and do something “nice” once a day when the opportunity arose, didn’t matter if I knew them or not…kinda lost track of doing that. Thanks for the reminder!
January 7, 2007 at 2:08 pm #519398It’s nice to know that there are people who still care and look out for one another!!
Great job CD and crew I bet the refreshments even tasted better after the job
BretJanuary 7, 2007 at 4:21 pm #519417that was really thoughtfull of you guys to lend a hand like that. I also stopped on friday night and helped a stranded person, she had her car broke down in the middle of the intersection, I was going to use my truck and push it, but bumpers didn’t line up, so I started to push it by hand, another guy stopped traffic and lended a hand to get out of the intersection and into a safe parking lot. that warm feeling of helping someone who is affraid of being hit and also not knowing what to do was enough warming for me. hopefully her van didn’t cost a whole lot of $$ to fix, sounded like the tranny went out.

My cousin up in Aitkin does the same thing with his neighbor. They are an older couple who heat their house with wood. He cuts all their wood for them during the summer. It is very rewarding!
