Well after the last couple years the hooks my brother and I have been using have been taken off the shelves and no longer made. We were able to place one more order a couple years back from the manufacturer but they said they would only be making them for the pros from there on out.
Now I started to tinker around the other day and came up with the same paint scheme as the ones no longer found.
Question is, what would you recommend for the painting of these hooks/jigs? Do you bake the paint on? Or just let them cure over time? I am trying to make the paint last as long as possible. We have had other close to our color hooks/jigs and seemed we had to replace the hooks after a couple fish hit for the paint was coming off.
Trying to avoid this from happening to these ones.
Now a little info on the paint it is a glow paint dont know if that matters on the type of cure one chooses….
    Any suggestions??

I do alot of jigs for myself and I have found out that most glow powder paints (pro-tec)dont glow as well after being baked, but they still glow.

It seems that the heat does something to affect the glow , you may try to bake @ a pre warmed 350 for 6-10 minutes instead of the reccommended(sp)15 minutes.

When I do my regular powder I bake the jig @350 for 15 minutes ,then do the eyes and then rebake for only 6 minutes it then produces a ROCK HARD finish.

Some times I use a air brush to add other colors then rebake when I do the eyes.

I use mostly pro-tec powder paint and also some comercial powder.

I also found out you can carefully mix some powder paints (fine powder)to produce a color of your own liking..I was quite surprised with results of mixing powder paints.

If you want to talk paint I can pm you my home # too

I hope this helps you out

Feel free to pm me. Maybe I can shoot you a pic of a couple I have left and see if you can come up with some and name your price. All I can say is I wont fish without some of these in my tackle box. Always have produced for us and proved to be exactly what they crave when fishing next to others using there red hooks etc..

The glow in color Pro-tec paints will work but leave a lot to be desired as far as the degree of colored glow you get.
The glow pro tec colors simply do not have enough of the pigment in the paint itself to be a good contender for the glow arena. For pro tec to get up to snuff in this department a small jar [2 oz.] would cost thirty bucks, if not more. You’ll need deep pockets, mostly filled with larger change, to dabble in this court if you want quality results.

I see that Pro-tec has an improved line of glow paints out. Has anyone tried them? It looks like they’re a liquid type of paint, but are “5x brighter and glow up to 16 hrs.”

Ok so today I made the first fatal mistake of doing my own jigs. I tried to bake the glow paint and after three minutes of being in the oven at 350 they turned black..
So back to Scheels I go tomorrow gotta start from scratch.
The paint I got does glow for up to 8 hours and had a nice bright glow just as bright if not brighter then the factory glow on the glow hooks themselves and outlasted the glow of the factory side, now this might be because of the age difference of the paints fresh verse old..

If that don’t work let me know and maybe we can paint them up for you. We make our own custom colors of glow and non-glow paints.

That 350 degree oven was your first issue…225 to 250 to cure these paints is sufficient.

Jeff [Scenic] can do things with jigs and paint that many others cannot. If you begin digging into the world of glow pigments and paints you’ll likely emmerge either a lot more confused or a lot smarter….if you already have a degree in lumino-physics. Let him take the guess work out of it.

The new and improved, glows for xxx hours, is packaging hooie. The glow in color pigments are only capable of glowing for so long, with the red and oranges being at the short end of the stick with maybe 15 minutes of glow life in ideal conditions. The blues and ultragreens can glow for extended times.

I have several of the powdered pigments on hand spot applications. Spots, not whole sides of baits. The cost of some of these pigments is more expensive than a booze habit and I let the tackle makers factor that into the lure cost when it gets sold. I use my stuff to add a spot or two where I want them.

You are correct the longest I got the paint to glow was about 72 minutes, not even close to 8 hours as claimed…
