wow! is right, where did she come from, someone should hand her a wet wipe so she can clean the crap out of her eyes and maybe pinch her to be sure that she is awake! there no more comapasion shown by our youngsters than that of our grandparents. I mean if our kids are not wanting to ruin God’s Creation, why then are they running around killing eachother then. makes no sense to me!!

thanks for sharing this article Jon.

I think to get a child interested in fishing today you have to start them early before they get “addicted” to the video games and such. I started the boy fishing at about 2. It takes commitment from the adult to get a child interested in fishing but the rewards last a lifetime.

I love fishing by myself or with friends but with that said, I make trips with my kids every chance that I get. Those trips are more fun than chasing big smallies.
Tangled lines, getting hit with hooks/bobbers, spilling minnows, candy and pop spilled, losing fishing equipment, etc. are part of the day and you need to know that is going to happen every time out. Kids get bored fast so make the trips fun, boat rides, letting them help drive, bring toys, fill up the livewell and put a sunfish or two in it but most important is getting them on fish, any fish. The other most important thing to keep in mind is when they want to go, GO, the trip is for them not you. There is nothing better than watching a child reeling in a fish, grinning from ear to ear.
I think that it is up to the parents to take time from the busy schedule that we all have and spend some quality time with the future of our sport. It is time that is truly priceless.

I wonder if he eats any meat of any kind. If these people with this type of frame of mind dosen’t want to kill anything to serve meat on thier table so be it but they should be able and try to see and recognize that hunters and fishermen that do like it on thier table are doing it for alot of diffrent quality reasons. All the thoughts that are used by hunters and fishermen are very very rational and they realize what thier doing. How many rational reasons can be thought of when a hunter or a fishmen take the chore of putting meat on the table themselves. How many thoughts does it spur about the reality and honesty of doing this. How much strength and insight does it create through years of finding food by yourself and for everyone at your table. I could go on, i wish these people would atleast try to see why things are done the way outdoors men and women do it. What are people going to do that listen to this kind of talk when it comes to feeding themselves, Were better at survival, ya i know we are and its too bad more aren’t. Atleast i know my family and the ones at my table are going to eat, maybe more importantly the food i’ve harvested and not simply just boughten at the local grocery store. Fishermen and hunters have gained an irreplacable value of supporting themselves and finding food on thier own and if need be in times when things might not be so bountiful at the grocery store.

Jon, I read half way through that editorial myself and had to stop. It was pathetic. Don’t hurt the poor fishy. In the Bible God told Peter to kill and eat animals he created.
I have a son and 2 daughters that I took fishing all the time when they were young. They loved it and still do as adults. Now they are taking their kids fishing. When they were older teens and their interests changed I sold my 14 ft. boat and basically quit fishing for a few years. A few years later my son bought a 16 ft. Alumacraft when he was 21. He used it all the time for 5 years and when he upgraded to a larger boat I bought his boat and started fishing alot again. Then he was showing the old man some fishing techniques. He is also the one who turned me on to this fantastic web site.

who ever it was he/she still needs to get the garbage out of thier eyes and look at what they are saying, it makes some sense, but then why write it if you aren’t going to start a wheel in motion to fix that problem. makes no sense to me.

I think that most kids are also a little too sheltered these days to be out on the water by themselves at a young age. Parents are afraid to let the kid go off on their own a little. It’s easier to sit them in front of the TV, that way you dont have to worry about them drowning or having some just released sex offender find your kid in a secluded area.
I remeber riding my bike to the trout stream and soaking worms all day by myself when I was 6 or 7 years old. How many of you would let your kids do that? I don’t know if I will. Of course that is also when trout season was just open or closed and you could keep trout. Now the regs look like a bible and I think you would be immediately strung up from the nearest tree if you tried to soak worms in a trout stream. Maybe all the micro-managing is making it too confusing.

I find it hard to believe the number of hunters is shrinking unless they are using relative terms. I wish there were fewer people picking up the sport. It’s WAY to difficult, time consuming and stressfull finding land to hunt pheasants and deer.
