The ice fishing season is really heating up in Northern MN. Thursday, Shallowriver, my brother and I Spent 4 hours fishing a small unamed lake I like to call “west whisper” near McKinley, MN. We fished glitter glows tipped with rainbows, between 1 and 3 ft off the bottom in 14-16 ft of water. Theres at least 11 inches of ice, and we fished a point where the bottom varied in depth and the Northerns seemed to be feeding aggressively. We ended up catching 15 Pike (all around the 5 lb. mark)(30-36 inches)with two snakes out of the bunch, a very respectible Largemouth (which was immediatly returned to the water) and a decent sunny. Sat. morn the bite had slowed a bit but everyone in our group again caught pike after pike with the biggest one being around 10 lbs. After losing alot of tackle, and putting our reels to the test we called it a day. Walleye continue to bite on St. Marys, and the crappies are as aggressive as ever on Pleasant. This is the time to get out, if your in St. Louis County

After removing the y bone, a quick dip in egg followed by my favorite batter (crushed saltine crackers and pancake batter, and a few croutons) 3 minutes in the deep fryer, and a bud or two, onw or two of these “slimers” can make quite the meal
