Guess I’ve never heard of leaving them out either. Is that more of a southern thing? Beans in for me, but I use pinto beans instead of the kidneys. And yup…round here chili with noodles is nuttin’ but goulosh or what we like to call, meat ‘n’ maggots!

“no beans” is pretty common in the Green Bay area and few of the chili places in Milwaukee (at least when I used to live there – although that was a million years ago). Same with noodles-on-the-side…

So I guess my question to you is what time should we all show up

Here’s a thought… How about an IDA-sponsored chili cook-off? We could have a small entry fee, maybe get some prizes donated by a few sponsors, and give all the proceeds to a worthy cause/charity! Throw some ice-fishing in the mix and it could be a great day!

My Bad! Maybe we could balance out the ’emission levels’ for the day – no four-wheelers, snowmobiles, or gas augers allowed…

Beans, beans the magical fruit. The more you eat the more you toot! Gotta have beans. I work with a girl from Texas and she questioned why beans are put in chili. Not a tradition down there according to her. Left over chili over some spaghetti noodles is pretty good along with some shredded cheddar cheese!

It aint Chili without the beans!!!

If it has noodles, I don’t know that it doesn’t become something different all together.

I’ve been a member of the ICS (International Chili Society) for three years now. Got into competition chili cooking several summers ago. Although I have never been in the top three in the red chili competition, I have come in second in a few shoot ‘n hollar contests. I also finished second in one of the peoples choice categories. These things are just a real fun time. The rules state “no beans or fillers (pasta)” for your batch to be judged, but you can add fillers for the peoples choice and samples. There is a competition in Blaine the weekend before the 4th of July. I think that is a regional qualifier for nationals. I do have a good friend who has made nationals. Beans on the side, chili over noodles is Cincinatti (spelling?)style. They have a web site where the national winner posts his winning recipe. Authentic chili has no beans. That being said, I like beans.

sorry to dredge up this old thread but thought I’d post results from an ‘informal survey’…

I took the batch of ‘meat only’ chili I made and split it into two portions. In one portion, I left out the beans; In the other portion, I added beans. Both pots were placed out for people to dish from. I also served noodles for people to place in their bowls and then ladle the chili over. The final results were that the pot without beans was gone well before the pot with beans… the people (at least in my house) have spoken!
