To Bean or Not To Bean… That is the question….

OK… I need some help settling a bet… I’m making a batch of my 5-alarm chili (always a Holiday Favorite ) and we are having a discussion of whether to add chili beans to the mix or if they should be served on the side. In my opinion, a great chili is really nothing more than an awesome meat ‘sauce’ (I use ground hamburger, some suet, unsweetned chocolate, paprika, red pepper, white pepper, cumin seeds, chili powder, Accent, onions and garlic – this stuff is HOT and it sticks to your mouth). The chili itself should be quite spicy and you achieve individual preferences by how much chili you put over your vermicelli (sp?) noodles or black beans. So it goes like this – you put either noodles or beans in your bowl (or both) and then ladle a healthy portion of the fiery chili over the top, cover with shredded extra-sharp cheddar, and enjoy! The other half here insists the beans should be added to the meat sauce!!! NO WAY in my books.

So…. what are the thoughts out there???

(Oh yeah, you gotta have plenty of to help wash it down and put out the fire… also, better have a baseball bat next to the crapper the next day to beat down the flames shooting out around the seat )

Definitely beans in the mix. How can you have chili without beans? My wife thinks I am nuts for wanting beans in chili as well. All I can figure is it must be a Midwest thing

I usually make two batches one with beans and one without (for the wife). Will not serve my chili until after the second day and it has cooled down, then I reheat it. Put on noodles or whatever you want. My sister and mother think they know how to make chili, but they put the Macaroni in when they make it

OK OK!!! I too like beans but the question is whether to have the bean IN the chili or do you serve the chili OVER the beans (in the actual bowl?)???

A “REAL” chili is always better after its been sitting for a day or two (Heat, cool, re-heat like you said above is the best – really brings out the fire and the flavor). I think it has something to do with the spices dissolving in the fats). Oh man, my mouth is watering waiting for the chili to be served

I also like the beans in the chili, but true chili makers( especially in Texas) would nver ruin a good chili by putting beans in it! D.

I don’t know that I’ve ever heard of chili without beans. Wouldn’t that be like spicy sloppy joe’s. Definately beans and not just any type of bean but dark red kidney beans only. I just made a big batch of chili this morning to eat tonight. I’ll have 3 of 4 daughters home tonight and they all wanted my chili. A few slices of colby jack cheese and some crackers is all I’ll need to complete the meal. Adding maccaroni makes it a spicy goolosh, not chili.

If “Chili Beans” don’t go in chili, then what good are they? I’d put them in, for sure!

Beans in the chile for me too.

I had the best chile I’ve every tried a couple months ago at a bar called Stadium View in Green Bay (next to Lambeau field). I don’t recall it even having beans. It was mostly meat, but that stuff lit me up like a Christmas tree. Talk about burning the next day – OMG. Just make sure your bathroom has Charmin. If you get the chance to try it when your at a Packer game – go for it – you won’t be disappointed.

I am against putting beans in anything. I cannot stand the texture. I am a little odd though… I’ve been told…. I make my wife leave beans out of mine, and I put it over bread, with some cheese.

I personally hate beans. And think I might be slightly allergic to them ..( wouldn’t suprise me as I’m allergic to nuts, dogs, cats, anything furry, and have astmah )
But they make my lips swell up and my mouth feel funny, plus i really just don’t like the taste.

no beans, takes away from the taste, just a good thick peice of texas toast, a ton of butter spread on it and dunk away. but you can’t forget to add the sour cream, cheese and a dash of season salt and more chili powder.

Great feedback guys . I didn’t expect this to look like a Marcum vs Vexilar debate

So here’s the deal – I decided to serve the chili like this: One serving bowl with the vermicelli noodles, one serving bowl with beans (went with black beans, no spices), and one large pot of bubbling hot chili mix (no beans added!). Also, a large portion of freshly shredded extra sharp cheddar. This way, if you want beans, you got ’em. If the chili is too hot, add noodles or more beans… Should satisfy pretty much any individual preference!
