My son is only in first grade, but we went to play it again sports and found some for $20. He isn’t playing hockey, they are just for skating on the pond in the back yard.
Hockeygiant in Minneapolis if you want new. Go to your local rinks and put up a sign with the size your looking for if you want used. Skates are like fishing reels they very greatly in quality and function. Good luck and Merry Christmas
westwood sports in Bloomington, they have literally hundreds of pairs of used skates that are on consignment I’m sure that you can find something there.
Gundy,
What sizes you looking for? Both my kids grew out of theirs this year, so I have a couple pairs of gently used skates I would part with…I believe one is size 8 or so, and the other is probably a 5.

It really depends on what you’re using them for. If it’s for hockey, don’t skimp on the quality. You have to make sure they fit well. The biggest problem with new skaters and skates is fit. If they don’t fit, the kid won’t want to skate. Take him to a sporting goods store that will “bake” the skates. This is simply a process where they heat the skates, and then you have your son wear them around for a while. This forms the insole to the shape of your boy’s feet. This is important. Especially if you’re buying used skates. Otherwise they are probably formed to someone elses feet already, and wont be very comfortable. Make sure you do this whether new or used.
Having said this, I have had really good luck with Play it Again Sports. My son is in his 5th season of hockey, and 6th season of skating. He has only had new skates once. And that was because the association he plays for outfitted him in his first year.
PM me if you have any other questions. I have a lot of resources for you if you’re interested.
got to be carefull on the baking of the skate though, some of the newer skates can be baked, but only 3 times. I usually get them baked once and then go home and sit in them with a pair of wet sock, (get the socks wet in the hottest water your feet can stand and tie the skates on tight and sit around and watch the t.v.) but some of the little kids skates are not bakeable. I usually go to Daves in fridley, I have gotten to know and play with a few of the guys that work there, they really take good care of me. as for just bombing around the outside rinks, again, a good used pair will make all of the difference in being used some more or sitting down in the basement or out in the garage collecting dust and getting rusty. I play about 4 times a week and a great fitting skate can’t be beat, just like a good pair of hunting boots. so with that in mind, find out if you want them to last or not, young kids, get them a pair of used qaulity skates.
my pennies worth.
