I’m sure you guys have had this question a few times, but here goes. I haven’t pulled lead core and I’m going to get a couple setups and was wondering what you guys would advise for it. I will be getting the sealine 47 for the reels but I was wondering if 18lb leadcore was the norm. And what should I look at for rods, I will be going to Cabellas to get this stuff. One more thing, how long of a leader do you use and what kind of line works best? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I run 9′ soft rods with a 30′ power pro leader on 10# test. For a stiffer rod style I would run mono, my personal favorite is 10# Big Game Supreme.

December 15, 2006 at 3:21 am #511526The 47 model has more line capacity than the 27, by quite abit.. It can hold all 10 colors, with some backing.
Jack.December 15, 2006 at 3:30 am #511529Every one has a different opinion.
I run 10lbs Berkley Vanish in moderately clear to clear lakes I like the thought of having my line disappearing in the water. In more stained lakes I will run 10lbs Berkley Fireline. The 0 stretch in fireline gives it incredible sensitivity which allows you to detect fowled plugs better.
If you haven’t bought those Sealines yet check out Abu Garcia’s new line of Line counters. They are the smoothest Line Counter on the market. The 6500LC will hold up to 8 colors of 18lbs lead core plus backing.

Jack.
I was thinking 17’s and 27’s.
December 15, 2006 at 4:41 am #511543I run a 10′ rod with a soft tip, Leader length depends againn on water clarity and depth your fishing.
On Bays deNoc in Michigan they run 30′ to 50′ leaders, on Pepin I run 15′ I always use mono, Berlley XT 10lb.works just fine.
On Mille Lacs I use a 20′ leader and 3 colors.
Lead core is great for precision trolling on contours either open water or the river.
Let us know how it goes this spring.

December 15, 2006 at 2:34 pm #511623I don’t think you can go wrong with this Cabela’s combo. I’d go with the 8ft 6in rod here.
Cabela’s store brand of leadcore line is good stuff. Holds it’s color well. Go with the 18#. One roll is 10 colors, so you will need one roll for each reel you plan to spool up.
My basic set up would be to spool all 10 colors up directly onto the reel, no backing. Then add a leader anywhere from 6 to 30 feet depending on conditions. I like 12-17 # mono for most river applications. 10# for lakes.

December 15, 2006 at 4:25 pm #511696Jon,
If you mostly use the lead core with trolling the river and then troll a lake every now and then, do you need to change from that 12-17# mono to the 10# mono, or can you get away with running that same set up?

December 15, 2006 at 4:30 pm #511699Yes, I would switch out the leaders. Actually, I switch out the leader about every other use anyway, so not a big deal.
I should mention I have 4 leadcore rod/reel set ups. Two for the river, two for the lake. My river set up is as described above. All 10 colors on the reel with a fairly short leader. On my lake set ups (I mainly fish Mille Lacs) I use 2 colors segmented in. So the reel would be set with about 200 yards of mono backing, 2 colors leadcore, followed by a leader anywhere from 6 – 60 feet.

December 15, 2006 at 4:34 pm #511703Jon,
is each color segment 25 yards or 50 yards? I am just wondering, I went to cabelas and got some nice trolling rods and was going to set them up for lead core, right now I have 14# mono on for trolling lakes.
thanks for the info
