I shot a real nice rooster yesterday and my buddies talked me into keeping it whole. I thought that the head was a little too shot up but they all told me it was fixable. Theres a small hole in the beak and a few small patches of the head feathers are missing. I could take some pics and post them. I was just wondering what the general rules were for what is and isnt fixable.

    Thanks,
    Lardy

I do know a taxidermist whom I would recommend. He is licensed by the Wisconsin DNR and US Fish and Wildlife Service. He is also a graduate of the Northwestern School of Taxidermy and teaches the subject at a local High School. I doubt I sould say more because this isn’t an ad, but he has done a good job for me and specializes in animals.

If you want more info send me a personal E Mail or E Mail me at [email protected]. Good luck with your mount.

I heard good thinks about Jack here on IDA. He has a real talent from what I’ve seen pics of and what others have said.

Corcoran Taxidermy has done all my work for the past 21 years. He is in Hampton. He will continue to keep getting my work, because he is a family friend, neighbor, and his work is top notch.

all of the bills/beaks on birds are replaceable. feathers on the other hand are not but there are always ways to cover it up. i guess it would depend in how many feathers were missing

just my opinon here, but if you think its to shot up, then it probably is. you may just want to wait till you get another you feel better about mounting. hate to see a guy drop a couple hundred in a bird not to be happy with it

Lee’s in Prescott did one for me last year and it looks good. I think he subs them out but the turnaround time was impressive.

    Lardy,

Thought I’d ad a note about Gary’s comment (thanks Gary).

I currently do not do any birds, I am doing Fish and Deer.

There are a lot of products available now in Taxidermy, I would not worry about small holes, and a few ruffled feathers. Care does start in the field tho.

Do look at a few Taxidermists work, and years in the field, do not just look at the price, and more money, generally does not mean better quality.

If you are mounting a Pheasant, look at their Pheasants.

Do not just drop it off somewhere and hope the best.

    Good Luck..

    Jack..

Lardy, I’m not a taxidermists but I’ve always been intrigued by it and I know enough that the hole in the beak is no problem being the skull and beak are removed and a head with an artificial beak is fitted. As for feathers, all you can do is manipulate the feathers to try and cover the bad spots. Clay is used in the hair of deer shoulder mounts during the drying phase and once the clay is dry and brushed out the hair will stay where the sticky clay had positioned it. I’m thinking that could be done to some extent with bird feathers.
