I caught him last July 19, on a fishing trip to Bow Narrows Camp. It was the last morning and we were working a submerged point 15-17 feet of water, casting out into 25-30 feet. I was using a Cabela’s 7′ Intercast rod with a baitcaster spooled with 20lb Fireline and no leader! Had just tied on a new lure, a 3/4 oz Rattlin Rapela in a shad color. I cast it out, let it sink, made about 2 turns on the reel and thought I was snagged up. Tried to free the lure, but to my suprise it started pulling back. after about a 10 minute smoking of my reel he was in the net ! We got about the last 7 minutes on video ! He had the whole lure in his mouth with 5 of 6 hooks set in. I was shaking so bad, I could hardly get the lure out. I did end up bringing him home to mount, figured he was a once in a lifetime fish. In our group of 10, we had 3 large Northerns…a 36″ caught out of a canoe ! A 41″ caught about 3/4 of a mile from mine. We will be going back again this year, need a hefty walleye to go on the wall next to the Northern, lots of 27-29″ walleyes up there, I had caught a 27 1/2″ walleye earlier in the week not 25′ from where I got the northern but threw him back, had a 29″ two years ago.
